northener...my brother too!!!
My mum was too ill and he was hungry!

marthamoo · 24/08/2005 09:55

Aaaaarrrrghhhhh! It's illegal to advertise Aptamil, that's the point!

harpsichordcarrier · 24/08/2005 09:55

I am not trying to make anyone feel bad. The point I was trying to make that mothers are making these choices for and on behalf of their babies, who don't have a voice. That gives everyone a greater responsibility; it is wider than just a personal choice. Of course there are lots of perfectly reasons why a mother might choose to formula feed, or might have no choice. I repeat, I am not criticising or judging anyone. I am only trying to emphasise that the debate is wider and more significant that individual, personal choices. It is about babies health.

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 09:55

ssd I am confused!!!

Caligula · 24/08/2005 09:56

OK for all of you who can't understand why some people would get worked up about this

first thread (I think)

here's another

and another

yet another

Sorry if I've missed any out. But all the arguments as to why some of us would "get worked up about it" are in there. And hopefully it will demonstrate that this isn't a bottlefeeding versus breastfeeding argument.

And now I'm going to do some work - if you see me in the next 10 minutes MT, shoot me.

mears · 24/08/2005 09:57

further info

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 09:57

I am sorry but if it is illegal then I would think mumsnet would withdraw it!
Dont understand why it is illegal. Dont under 6months need formula if mum cant/wont b/f?
Is there something better than formula to feed them other than bm?
SSD..do we not agree? so whay are you saying I am pompous etc?

ssd · 24/08/2005 09:58

marthamoo when did MN become a "pro-breast-feeding parental advice website." ??

The reason I like MN is that there are views from lots of different people and the site doesn't condone any of them {unless nasty}, it lets you have your say?

So MN is this a pro breast feeding site then?

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 10:01

feels like it sometimes!
I b/f all mine exclusivly till 4 and 6 months!
But when I read on here I feel sorry for the ones who bottle feed as lots of people do come across as undermining them! sorry but thats how I feel!

Toothache · 24/08/2005 10:01

Caligula - We can read those all you want.... still doesn't change the fact that many people will just not understand why this is being made such a big deal of! Can you understand why people might not understantd???
You're assuming that people don't understand because they haven't read the facts..... but I have and it just doesn't bother me that much. Simple.

You can't make someone feel the same as you do just by bombarding them with the reasons why you feel that way.

hercules · 24/08/2005 10:01

Mumtosomeone - have you read mears links?

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 10:02

no

will it change my mind?

Fio2 · 24/08/2005 10:03

whatever anyone thinks, the majority of women HAVE formula fed their babies at some point, statistics show that. Whether is is right or wrong in your own mind, doesnt matter. For what i have seen if the ad isnt illegal then I cant see the problem with mumsnet showing it, thats all

and if mumsnet posters are ALL PRO breastfeeding at any cost of other posters i am not sure i want to get involved either

hercules · 24/08/2005 10:03

No, but you may understand that it is not about bottledfeeding mums being slated but about a wider issue of dodgy advertising.

marthamoo · 24/08/2005 10:04

mts...

It is illegal to advertise formula for babies under 6 months. It is not illegal to advertise "follow-on" milk for babies over 6 months. This is why follow-on milk was invented - so that the formula manufactureres could get round the law and raise brand awareness. The link on Mumsnet home page is not an advert for formula milk. That would be illegal. It is a link to Milupa's website which details how breast-feeding is best for your baby but then goes on to list its products. So Mumsnet are not going to pull an advert for being illegal because technically there is no advert - just a link to an advice website run by Milupa. It's a way for Milupa to get round the advertising ban and raise brand awareness.

Yes of course babies under 6 months need formula if they are not going to be breast-fed. Advertising that formula, however, is illegal.

ssd · 24/08/2005 10:04

mumtosomeone I didn't say you were pompous!! I said I find the way people are leaving cos MN is advertising formula pompous!

If it is illegal to advertise formula surely MN should be made aware of that and the advert dropped for that reason alone, not because someone might choose to give their baby formula cos they seen it here??

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 10:06

yes but thats not really what I have said..is it?
I asked what the next best thing is to bm...no answer
I asked who is tik tok really upsetting...no answer
I asked why it is illegal to advertice formula..no real answer!!

hercules · 24/08/2005 10:07

I havent time to answer all your questions but there is no thing close to breastmilk.

You will need to research why it is illegal yourself.

marthamoo · 24/08/2005 10:07

What I said, ssd, was..

I meant the Milupa website, not MN - sorry, is that not clear?

mts, how can you be debating this issue when you have not read the links or other threads? Have you even looked at the link on the homepage and the Milupa website?

wordgirl · 24/08/2005 10:07

mumtosomeone, if you read tiktok's posts and mears' links I think you will find all your questions are answered!

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 10:08

thank you...for nothing!!
So whats wrong with saying it is the next best thing?
Can anyone understand me here? or are you just ignoring me?

JoolsToo · 24/08/2005 10:09

I think we're all a little misguided if we think that mothers to be are not aware there are several brands of formula milk on the market - which one is chosen may be due to whats on offer in hospital, what they've seen in a supermarket, what a friend as recommended or through advertising.

Every business promotes their product - its a heinous crime [rolls eyes]

As has been oft stated here and on the man related threads, most mners hadn't even seen the advert and never would have until it was pointed out - you've done Milupa a favour.

I can't believe I'm posting here - round and round and roung we go

marthamoo · 24/08/2005 10:09

OK, feel like I am banging my head against a very dense brick wall here.

Going to do something more productive.

hercules · 24/08/2005 10:09

They are saying it is very close to breastmilk but it's not. You will need to read the links.

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 10:09

more and more on here I am made to feel unimportant and that my opinions are not valued!
Not sure why I come on!!
Good job I am relativly thick skinned and not a young first time mum or you lot would have me in a heap!!!
