Toothache - you need to read the thread to understand the reason why this is a problem. Read Tiktoks posts and my link. There are so many threads on this that I forget which one they are on!

I reiterate that there is no problem at all with women choosing to bottle feed. There is a problem when formula milk advertisers pull women in supposedly supporting breastfeeding and then persuading them that their milk is the closest thing ever to breastmilk.

This is a very contetious issue and I am sad that mumsnet has taken the route to use formula milk manufacturers to fund the site. There are other products that will raise revenue.

Unfortunately a number of mumsnetters aren't reading the reasons why this is a problem and are assuming it is an attack on bottle feeding mums. It most certainly is not.

Milupa is spending loads of money on their campaign because they know it works! What better endorsement than being on a successful parenting site.

I haven't read all of this but just wanted to say a big thankyou to Tiktok for all the b/feeding help she has given on this site, she helped me many times directly and indirectly and will be a great loss to MN. I hope Tiktok will feel able to come back at some point.

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 09:31

so which formula is nearest to breast milk?

spacecadet · 24/08/2005 09:31

found some interesting reading

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 09:32

feel I need to repeat...who is tiktok targeting?

marthamoo · 24/08/2005 09:33

That is interesting, spacecadet, I think Milupa are sailing very close to the wind.

harpsichordcarrier · 24/08/2005 09:34

Toothache - you make an interesting point about the choosing to bf or formula feed being a "personal choice." I was thinking - it's not, is it? Not really. I may make a personal choice to smoke or drink or not to exercise, but the choice to be bf or not is not made by the person who then experiences the consequences, i.e. the new born baby. If he/she could speak, then what would he choose? (seriously - can anyone argue that a new born baby who knew about the health and development benefits of bf would choose formula?) Who speaks for the baby?
It's not about some sort of lifestyle choice for the mother, and it is most definitely NOT about "insulting" anyone or criticising their own personal circumstances - it is about the present and future health of ALL babies. And having this kind of advert works against that.

Toothache · 24/08/2005 09:34

Okay, so its a sneaky way to advertise..... so what? Isn't that what marketing is all about???

If something is £9.99... we KNOW that its basically a Tenner.... but something in your head tells you its not as bad as spending £10. IYSWIM.

Like Fio2, I never look at the homepage and don't really care what MN do to keep alive. I wouldn't comment on any other website about their means of funding. After all.... its none of my business!

I'm off to MN now...... see if anyone has bought my house yet. >hint< >hint<

Mumsnet team - Just to let you know that there are many MN'ers who are not opposed to this.

Fio2 · 24/08/2005 09:34

there is an old saying though "beggars can't be chooser's" We have no idea who approaches mumsnet with regarding to advertising and we shouldn't make the assumption that they have loads of people queeing up to advertise (not dissing MN, just trying to see the other perspective)

EvesMama · 24/08/2005 09:35

with reference to space cadets link..i got loads of milk and not just follow on milk samples when dd was a baby and that was only two years ago???
had no idea it was illegal to promote formula till i read this thread?

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 09:36

feel I need to repeat...who is tiktok targeting?

Toothache · 24/08/2005 09:36

Harpsichordcarrier - Incredibly insensitive.

monkeytrousers · 24/08/2005 09:37

"..could result in the over-nourishment of the infant"

Sorry, to go off tangent but what does this mean?

(Caligula - get to work!)

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 09:38

feel I need to repeat...who is tiktok targeting?

Caligula · 24/08/2005 09:38

Yes Ma'am!

oliveoil · 24/08/2005 09:39

harpsichordcarrier - it is a choice for some people so I really wouldn't make such a crass generalisation. Lifestyle choice indeed, pah. Some women can't breastfeed, spend ages trying and then feel like failures because of views like yours. Or some just don't want to.

I did b/f but lots of my friends couldn't. Stop being so judgemental.

Caligula · 24/08/2005 09:40

I don't want to speak for Tiktok but perhaps she's asking all those who come on and say "what's the fuss about?" to go and read the threads so that they can find out what all the fuss is about, to save us all making the same fuss over and over again??? Then you can find out what the objections are and argue with the arguments we've actually made, rather than the arguments that you think we might have made?

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 09:40

feel I need to repeat...who is tiktok targeting?

Toothache · 24/08/2005 09:41

Beg to differ..... there are a few posts on this thread that are implying that bottlefeeding is the fastest way to hell.

Mears - Unfortunately the point seems to have been lost in the void that is the subject of "feeding your baby"!

Sorry, I still don't see why this is such a terrible thing for MN to do. Have MN team responded at all?

spacecadet · 24/08/2005 09:42

as i said earlier, formula is always going to exist and there will always be women who are unable to breastfeed who would like to make an informed choice about the formula the buy..however having also foundthis (scroll down to 5th heading), you certainly have to question the way all formula companies advertise, it could appear, that they are targeting women who could be struggling with b/f, so called helplines according to the article just put women in touch with company members.i dont have a problem with formula advertising as i said, but they shouldnt be directed, i guess at b/f women, i still feel though that MN, are unfairly copping the flack for this.

Avalon · 24/08/2005 09:42

mumtosomeone - isn't tiktok merely saying this goes against her personal moral code and is therefore leaving.

I don't think - the way I've read it, anyway - that she is targetting anyone.

monkeytrousers · 24/08/2005 09:42

This does seem like a very cynical marketing strategy. Another line in the sand redrawn. In this sense, it is a question of ethics.

MTS, Tik Tok posted at 11.50 last night on this thread so you can read her post and get her views. She is clearly a very principled person and explains herself very articulately there.
