Isn't it time MN Towers was staffed through the night?

RambleOn · 15/07/2010 00:56

That thread being trolled at the moment is the worst example I've ever seen. Poor woman going through a traumatic experience like that and then logging on to her thread offering support and a lot of piss-taking

Surely this site is big enough to warrant someone monitoring through the night? Hell, I'll do it, I'm often on here till the early hours and it would solve my out-of-school-hours-job problem in a flash.

I have emailed the mods at PH and explained in what i hope is a serious but not emotional tone that these men have stepped way over the mark.

I think that we have proved we have a sense of humour and that when trollers wish to come oon and be funny we will quite happily join in the fun. (as evidenced by those cycling boys earlier yesterday) but what was posted last night was far beyond a bit of fun.

I did post on their own forum detailing how proud they should be of their members. Whilst there were a couple of quite vile replies most were thankfully deeply shocked and disgusted by their antics.

One would hope that they have their posting priveledges suspended or revoked and that it sends a strong message to others who think it may be funny to try again later.

For now though i would suggest that we are all a little more vigilant and that if you do spot a troll you don't engage with them but simply Report to HQ for a speedy removal.

I don't think it would be anything like that - one suggestion was for some form of 'out of hours' moderators to be able to hide posts for review by MNHQ.

That would seem (to me at least) a perfect solution and today was not the first time (nor will it be the last) when some idiots decide to play the fool (some months back it was some IT contractors forum members messing about)

All it would need would be a few posts to be 'zapped' quickly for them to get bored and f* off somewhere else (OK, not ideal if they just had nothing better to do than act like 10yo lads wherever they go) but swift action that could put a stop to their fun would reduce/ stop site vs site arguments/ insults, too.

It was lucky Tech was about, but somehow I doubt that can be taken for granted.

I have had the following response from one of the Mods at Pistonheads.

Hello

I can appreciate your extreme feelings about the behaviour of some PH members on your forum, and I agree, it was completely inappropriate.

I have closed or deleted the threads that are discussing this and will ask for some Haymarket management guidance on what appropriate action to take will be tomorrow, UK time.

I have put you in here so we can talk privately about the way forward.

Glen

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 15/07/2010 10:48

If I'm getting the gist, some nobends came on to a very sensitive thread 'for a laugh'? I am actually shocked that any adult would find rape amusing. Fuckers.

Gigantaur · 15/07/2010 10:55

that is indeed the case Chicken.

Poledra · 15/07/2010 10:55

Just wanted to say well done to Gigantaur and Tech for getting on the case so swiftly last night. I saw the posts (have been lurking on the thread) and was truly appalled that anyone could think it was appropriate.

Gigantaur · 15/07/2010 11:48

further response from one of their top bods

Hello Gigantaur

We will be looking at this very closely, and you have my assurances that anyone who is found to have posted comments will be dealt with accordingly.

I can only apologise for the actions of a small minority of our users. I would be grateful if you could pass my apologies onto your friends and colleagues too so that everyone is aware that we do not condone the events that took place.

I'm sure you don't want to be in here all day, so if you are happy with our actions I will release you from here. All I ask is that you allow us to deal with the matter from here on in, and that we keep it away from the forums from now on. It's a matter that I think we would all rather forget.

Best regards
Paul

RedArsedBaboon · 15/07/2010 12:28

they obviously

MmeLindt · 15/07/2010 12:45

Well done Rambleon, Gigantaur and Tech for your swift removal of the posts.

I have used PH a bit in the past few months, mainly lurked, occasionally posted, for car advice.

SagacityNell · 15/07/2010 12:55

They clearly don't give a shit do they?

Gigantaur · 15/07/2010 12:59

I am very glad that the moderators have taken it so seriously.

I think it is important that they know we are not "miserable fat bingo winged slags" but in fact are more than capable of enjoying some laughs with them.

I am sure if they had been inventive with their trollery they would have had a bit of fun and so would we.

But they chose a thread that was so far beyond jokeworthy and they pissed on it. It was a disgusting piece of work and i am very glad that at least some of the sites members can appreciate that.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 15/07/2010 13:06

The members who can't see that a traumatic thread from a woman in a dangerous situation is not the place to piss about are truly arrogant pricks. Enjoy your virginity, lads.

DuelingFanjo · 15/07/2010 13:19

many of them clearly don't give a shit. Acting as if the lack of moderators makes their shitty opinions valid, like they are somehow doing us a favour by highlighting our 'flaws'! FFS.

They are expecting us/MumsnetHQ to 'control the place and yet fail to grasp that it was their behaviour which was wrong. I have known brighter 4 year olds.

stressed2007 · 15/07/2010 13:25

What site did these people come from?

DeFluffy · 15/07/2010 13:28

excellent work gigi and tech

RedArsedBaboon · 15/07/2010 13:59

stressed - pistonheads (in their forum bit called 'lounge'

BertieBotts · 15/07/2010 14:02

Yes I agree Gigantaur - trolling can be a laugh, when it's in the appropriate section. I think what you and MmeLindt wrote on the PH forum ws very good.

Gigantaur · 15/07/2010 14:04

is it still up? thought it had all been deleted?

DuelingFanjo · 15/07/2010 14:07

there's anew thread Gigantaur. here

seems a fair few of them think what was done was a disgrace but there are a few, ie those who were actually involved, who think they did nothing wrong as it's a public forum.

Some of them seem rather worried that their owners/publishers, Haymarket, might kick up a fuss but they seem to be arguing a lot about the rights and wrongs of that rather than discussing the fact that the trolling was a very disgusting and deliberate attempt to cause upset.

there seem to be some decent people on there and looks like one member has been banned now.

DuelingFanjo · 15/07/2010 14:08

seems they have decided to lock the thread though.

ThatBloke · 15/07/2010 14:14

Hi, I came to your site via that PH thread.

Please don't ban me. I (and lots of others there) agree that the whole thing was completely inappropriate.

I apologise unreservedly on their behalf (if such a thing can be done).

There are a lot of topics here to stimulate the tight-pants wearing kleenex-warriors so perhaps it was only a matter of time.

However I have joined as I hope to be able to share in the obvious good that goes on here, in both directions.

Er, that is all really

RedArsedBaboon · 15/07/2010 14:24

welcome

BecauseImWorthIt · 15/07/2010 14:31

Welcome.

And MmeLindt - great post on PH.

I was to read what went on last night.
