MN scientists: do air purifiers actually work?

Our neighbours smoke, and as we live in an old tenement flat it drifts through to our flat. It smells gross, but I'm more worried about the health effect on my DCs.

We can't do anything structurally to the flat (we're renting), so I'm thinking about getting an air purifier. Does anyone know if they actually work to eliminate smoke particles?

Should do, you might need a HEPA one to get smoke particles out, not sure...

And you'll need to get one big enough to deal with the whole flat - or are you thinking just the DC's room?

Actually it's just our sitting room which has the problem, and mainly when we have a window or the back door open pulling air through (so it's worse in the summer).
