DD2 wants roller skates for her 5th birthday. She's pretty coordinated but no idea how she'll get on ... Where should I look? Any thoughts/recommendations?

Two of my dds were good skaters at 5. So yes a coordinated 5yo child will be able to skate. We had what used to be called Disco Skates for this age - 2 pairs of 2 wheels + a brake one on the front, we also have skates that look like trainers with 2 pairs of wheels. Then they moved into the proper inline skates at about 7.

Don't forget the safety gear - especially a helmet. Don't mean to be alarmist, but I fractured my skull as a little girl - I was not wearing a helmet though.

Thanks so much fennel & SJ.

fennel, are these the disco skates? This is certainly the kind of thing she's looking for. Who makes the trainer style ones?

And yes thanks for the warning SJ, good point.

Oh, just realised I linked to adult ones. Can't find kids ones in that range. I guess it would be these then?

Ours all came from car boot sales but the disco skates look like the first ones you linked to. But with a jazzy luminous spotty pattern and green wheels.

The trainer ones are a bit like this www.skates.co.uk/Roller-Skates/Odyssey-Black-Pink.htm

but the 2 pairs of wheels + front brake is good for learning on, not as fast as the online skates.
