In all my years of driving this has never happened to me before....

the gas struts that hold the boot open on my not very old car have stopped working (and I nearly clobbered myself on the head today when I opened the boot. tis a 54 plate Renault Scenic.

I assume these are parts that can be replaced, but in over 20 years of driving all sorts of old bangers, I've never come across having to do this before on an old car, let alone a newish one.

Feeling very grrrrr about it as it has various other ishoos (blower works when it feels like it, it misfires but "the computer says it's fine" , bits have fallen off it with alarming regularity) and I can't afford to replace it.

I know we had a car once where the tailgate had to be held up by someone or balanced on your head (fine art to learn!) can't remember what it was though, but know it was older than yours

Yes the gas struts can fail. I used to work for BM and they failed loads on the newbies.

Look for secondhand - like Find-a-part or even e-bay.

Build quality only seems to exist on the top end now. Thats why I bought a 05 plate BMW for the price of a small newish car.
