I've just dropped my iPhone down the loo!

I fished it out straight away and dried it, tested it to see if it worked was able to call the house phone but now its gone dead - is there any hope? Is was only in there for a split second

Please tell me you've done something similar!

don't try to switch it on again!

this sounds bonkers, but apparently it works.. put it in a bag of rice.. whihc will dry it out

my friend did this after she dropped hers in teh loo

leave it a good few days though

weegiemum · 15/05/2010 18:12

My ds dropped his tamagotchi down the loo and it never worked again!

Hope it is not the same for the iphone!

Needanewname · 15/05/2010 18:15

i did this to my blackberry....twice.

first time i took it straight apart and left to dry a few days, worked fine. second time, it refused to turn on again so i had to claim on my insurance.

i read about the bag of rice thing too, or leave it in the airing cupboard for a few days. dont use a hairdryer though. makes it worse.

Ffrecklefface · 15/05/2010 18:27

Mine went in the washing up bowl...and after being dead for two days it self healed and works perfectly now.

Never underestimate the power of positive thinking. (But I would also try the rice too...)

eandh · 15/05/2010 18:35

I dropped my mobile down the loo and did exactly as you did and asked on here, got a tupperware container and filled 3/4 fll with rice and placed phone in there and lid on took about 2 days till it worked (do not keep trying it as that can damage it more think I managed to leave it 36 hours tried it, it worked but screen still had condensation so put it back in rice for another day and it then worked fine (well did DD2 threw it on tiled floor and smashed it now )

Needanewname · 15/05/2010 19:15

OK thanks is in rice now, will leave it and not try to turn it on - arrrrgggghhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DH thinks its highly amusing!

U had kept old phone as a spare in case anything like this happens, bloody DD2 found it thinks its her phone and has lost it! What will I do without a mobile? How will life continue? What did we do before mobiles? How will I cope without the games?

God I'm stupid

Change the rice every so often (daily?)

I managed to put one of the house phones in the washing machine (don't ask ). Two weeks (we were away and had two other phones) in the airing cupboard with the battery out and its been fine since. Fingers crossed yours comes back to life. Just don't boil it for tea...

Needanewname · 16/05/2010 14:54

Thanks tangle - have changed the rice this morning and will do again tomorrow - fingers crossed

Wrap it in a towel and put it on a radiator.
Who did you buy it from? When I bought my ipod direct from Apple a few years back I dropped it down the loo the first day I had it I was honest about what happened, sent it for repair, and they sent a new one back. I like to think they didn't even try and repair the old one because of where it had been

Needanewname · 16/05/2010 15:01
  1. I called Apple, they can repair for £146 which is a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a new phone. Will have to wait and see.

Do you think household insurance would cover this? Will have to dig out the documents I suppose

OP posts:
HurleySatOnMe · 16/05/2010 15:09

Do you really have to pay for repair? Mine was free, though it was obviously my own damn fault and not a technical fault. Still, if it's cheaper then I'd go for that and hope they just give you a new one anyway- I think water damage is pretty much a guarantee of a dead iphone. Deffo check out your insurance, and in future, keep it out of the bathroom

Needanewname · 16/05/2010 17:06

Well I guess I would have to pay seeing as it is my fault, not a fault with the phone! Will let you know how I get on.

Tip of the day - do not leave your phone in you back pocket when you go to the loo!!!!!!

OP posts:
TreeTrunkThighs · 16/05/2010 17:21

Mine went down the loo a few weeks ago. It didn't survive. I went to the apple shop and they sold me a brand new one for £139.

Hope you have more luck

LadyBiscuit · 16/05/2010 17:29

You need to let it dry out completely before you switch it on again. Turn it off, leave it for a week and pray to the Apple gods

Needanewname · 16/05/2010 19:58

£139 is better than £549 which is the cost of a new one on pay as you go.

Still can't believe my own stupidity!

I think, all the advice for wrapping in towels, putting by a radiator/in the airer/bag if rice etc are for phones where you can just take out a battery and seperate. Can you do that to this phone?

DH's touch got hit by a wave, not much water. It died. End of story. Sorry. Not possibly not what you want to hear, but i think it is screwed.

MisSalLaneous · 16/05/2010 20:09

A friend's Iphone fell in the toilet, and she claimed for a new one on household insurance - accidental damage. If the drying out technique doesn't work, you might be able to do that.

seb1 · 16/05/2010 20:10

As you used it while wet you may have blown some components, due to shorts, sorry not what you wanted to hear.

Pavlov · 16/05/2010 20:15

Oh also, have you had any travel insurance at all recently, as if you were away for the weekend when it dropped down the toilet, you could claim on that. We had £100 excess on home insurance (had out of the house insurance with it) but only £40 on travel insurance. We had an annual policy, and DH had the bright idea of claiming on it, seeing as we were camping for the weekend when it happened. Clever man, I forgot all about it.

whywhywhydelilah · 16/05/2010 20:23

Put it in a cup of rice overnight.

It absorbs all the moisture this has fixed my phone and my camera.

HTH

Needanewname · 16/05/2010 20:25

Thanks all - I'm thinking the house insurance though don;t know what the excess is - will look it up now

LadyBiscuit · 17/05/2010 14:13

My advice was based on tipping a whole glass of wine over my laptop and I did try and restart it before someone told me not to. It works fine now. Have no idea if laptops and iphones are similar but worth a go to save losing no claims bonus I'd think

Needanewname · 18/05/2010 23:08

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

I've left it in rice since Saturday, booked my appointment tomorrow with the genius bar (or whatever they're called) tomorrow at the Apple Store. The woman on the phone suggested that I try plugging it in to the computer so as a last ditch attempt I did this evening and guess what? Yes its working!!!!!!!

All my emails are back, photos, texts apps everything. Am very very please and may just treat myself to a new pair of shoes!!!!!
