What would be a really fabulous present for a new baby? What was the best present your baby received?

Two of our friends are having babies this summer, one will be a firstborn, one a second.

I would love to give each of them a really lovely memorable present for the baby - price range I suppose between say £20 to £50.

What was the best thing your baby was given?

I have previously given other friends unusual toys or special items of clothing (just to give you an idea!) For various reasons I am not keen on giving a book, or christening-type gifts.

Sleeping bags with arms in them - this sort of thing

We got given 4 comforters and 3 baby memory books so I wouldn't bother getting any of those, as you won't be the only one and yours may not get used.

The best toy we got was a wiry thing which I think is called a winkel - you can get it from Amazon:

www.amazon.co.uk/Toytopia-200930-Winkel-Rattle/dp/B00008XY4B/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=baby&qid=127409127 0&sr=1-1

DS didn't use it much at first, but now he's 4 months he loves it - its easy for him to pick up and chew.

The next best thing which we didn't get as a present but use now I've borrowed one from the library is a music CD with kiddies songs on it. Really good for a first time mum and I wish I'd been given one.

I like the Touchy-Feely range of board books too. We got given one and I've since bought some others from Amazon.

a voucher for a cleaner to come once a week for the first month - Best Present Ever.

on the day the baby is born buy the papers, local and national and put a blue/pink ribbon around it

KSal · 17/05/2010 12:02

following on from the newspapers idea (which is fab) a friend of ours also bought the number one album and single from the day too... i loved that. my DD was a proper rock baby with metallica and kings of leon!

Best present we got was a 'Plot-a-Tot' wall chart. Sounds lame but they're brilliant. Basically, it's a development chart, with a little circle for every day of the child's first year, with stickers for you to put on the appropriate day - e.g. 'my first party', 'my first smile', 'my first step', 'my first shoes' etc. The reason I loved it so much was that it was very easy to keep it religiously up-to-date - whereas often with these 'baby record' type books, I think you write in it for the first week and then forget. Now we've got a permanent record of DS's first year, and all his milestones. I'm pregnant at the moment, and I'll definitely be buying another one for this baby (also it will be fun for DS1 to help put the stickers on).

They're only eight quid and you can get them on Amazon. They come in different designs, like this.

I love the blanket idea. I got some for my nieces for Christams , and also a work colleauges baby gift from these people personal cashmere. Personalised ones are lovely to keep.

They are beautiful quality, really soft and wash well too. My DS2 also has one.

I love the CD ideas. I'm thinking now I'll need to do a gift hamper. Plot a Tot is cool.

Ds had a White Company wool fringed blanket, giftwrapped by the company, sent in the post

Dd was given a pink bath towel with an embroidered fairy on it. Not one of those annoying baby ones with the hood but a bath one that she still uses now - 5 years later.

LaTrucha · 17/05/2010 22:23

I liked my Tomy Moonlight Dreamshow. It's the sort of thing I wouldn't buy as I think it's expensive for what it is, but DD adored it.

NO blankets with acrylic / artificial fibres in them. I have had at least a dozon and you cannot use them with little baby! I've already had one for DC2 and he's not due for 6 weeks. Just filling up space in my drawers.

LaTrucha · 17/05/2010 22:25

I would have been thrilled if someone had bought me a sheepskin - or that carseat wrap.

paulaplumpbottom · 17/05/2010 22:30

Someone had wine put up for them

walkingonthemoon · 17/05/2010 22:38

I think.... 'happy parent(s), happy baby' - and my goodness, this made me happy....

Best present was mum coming round when I had DD - we were in that 'deleriously happy but clueless bubble' - shattered from sleepless nights, anxiety and me bf'ing round the clock...

My angel of a mum came over, washed up, did the ironing, and MADE ME MY FAVOURITE DINNER, STUCK IT IN THE OVEN, AND ON THE WAY OUT SAID, DISH OUT 5 ISH (was a casserole on low so could be left).

Was the best ever tasting thing i have ever eaten - hardly touched the sides, we were hungry and needed looking after in our transition from being a son and daughter to a mum and dad....

Smiling from the memory....

Please tell me that I haven't killed this thread...

Isaidheyhoney · 18/05/2010 17:28

Takes longer than that to kill a thread, WOTM. I think maybe a hamper made up of trumpettes, a CD, a blanket/taggie, and then tuck in something nice for Mum, maybe Aromatherapy Associates Deep Relax bath oil, or a box of their tiny sample bottles just to get her addicted.

Both wine and trees are really lovely ideas but not quite right for the people we are thinking of.

Hey all, if you know what the theme of the nursery is and you want to get them a personalized piece or just a really nice modern decor wall art hanging you should check our this site > FORMbaby Nursery Wall Decor for the Modern Nursery.
