morning,

we've just made ds a sandpit and now i need to get some sand. i've looked online and have came accross sites that are saying that there is crystalline silica and tremolite in some play sand and to buy only washed river sand etc. so does anyone have recommendations for safe sand or what type i should buy?
please help-i'm so confused now!

thanks

do not buy building sand - everything goes orange

Argos play sand is much cheaper than ELC. however I know nothing of silica or tremolite

Shaz10 · 10/04/2010 18:49

I get my play sand from B&Q.

is the argos or tesco play sand golden in colour? the b and q one is quite brown in colour (the one my parents got for us anyway and i am keen to get some more golden stuff)

They used ot sell it at ToysRUs as well. It was a kind of white soft sand.

Make sure you put a cover of some sort on the sand pit. Cats just love to poo in it otherwise.

Get "sharp sand" from a builder's merchant, is the same as what ELC etc call play sand and about 1/3 the price. I'm a geologist, I know about sand!

PS Sharp sand is not sharp!

thanks all, we ended up with washed play sand from b&q as it said non-toxic! BikeRunSki is sharp sand mined or river sand?

I think people should be pretty careful what they buy. Tremolite in playsand is a big deal in america. Dont assume that just because its not regulated that its safe. They knew asbestos was unsafe for about 80 years before they regulated its use.

Lots of playsand is actually ground up rock, and tremolite can cause cancer. I got mine from Higgi (via the net) which is tested and tremolite free.
