Cheap Pay as you go mobiles?

I make 1 or 2 calls on average a day mostly to home.

what should I buy?

Personally, I'd look online to find the best tariff for you, and buy the right SIM, then get a simple phone off ebay, if you don't need anything fancy.

I'm afraid I don't know the PAYG tariffs very well at the moment, but you can get better prices online than anywhere else, I think. (My tariff is lovely, but I'm a heavy texter who never phones, so it wouldn't work for you!)

Virgin are good, and if you sign up for a PAYG Dirct Debit (sounds silly but it works well) you get an itemised bill every month (so nobody can "borrow" your phone without you knowing) and if you want to use it abroad you don't have to worry about how much credit you have on it before you go.

Have a look at their reconditioned phones , we bought one for DS2 which was half-price and could have been new.

Ways to pay - Direct Debit at the bottom . They also do bundles (makes unti cost cheaper) but if you don't text they're probably no use to you. Call rates are reasonable anyway.

Thanks guys, I've looking at Virgin - but I make short call so 15p a minute seems quite a lot

I can't make head nor tail of the three website - it doesn't seem to tell you the cost of the calls

I have also been looking at Tesco (which seems OK @ 5p a minute for 3 numbers and 10p for all others)

You don't actually pay for a minute if you call for less, but if you always ring the same numbers Tesco probably is your best bet, I'd forgotten about that deal

I noticed the other day that Morrisons were selling PAYG phones for £25 - can't remember any other details though.

I would think that any major supermarket is a good starting point for looking for a good deal.

I got a phone from AMAZON for my mum for christmas for £19.99 with £5 credit on vodaphone

So basically it cost £14.99 a sagem {BRAND NEW}

i was with orange for 5 years but now i'm with tesco and like the favourite number thing a lot.

Hang on, have just checked Tesco website, it's 10p a min/5p a text for your 3 favourites v 20p/10p otherwise, isn't it?

Still better than most of the others for a couple of calls a day, but if you got up to 5 mins with Virgin it would be 5p a min.

(20p a min to other networks is very good, but you won't be doing that?)

If you ring a landline on Virgin for 3 x 2mins it's 30p + 30p + 10p. I think.

Why? (surely it would only drop to 5p per min after 5 mins on the call - not after a culmative 5mins used anytime)

No, 5 mins a day - after that it's 5p a min till the next day

so 15p x 5min = 75p
plus say 5 mins @ 5p = 25p

or tesco
10 mins at 10p a min

same

but at 20 mins

15p x 5min = 75p
plus say 15 mins @ 5p = 75p

or tesco
20 mins at 10p a min = £2

So if you spend more than 10 mins on the phone a day - Virgin is better

Yes, I thought from what you said about your usage that Tesco will be best for you, km...if you find your usage starts creeping up you can always switch
