Green Flag Breakdown Service - Anyone a member ?

I have been offered a good deal on breakdown service from Green Flag with my car insurance. We are currently with the RAC but we seem to pay a small fortune for this.

Anyone a member of Green Flag and had to use them for a breakdown? What is the service like ?

Is this through Direct Line? If it is, I have always found them to be really good.

I have called out Green Flag a couple of times, and they've been prompt and helpful.

Once was for a flat tyre. We had tried to change it ourselves, and then some passers by had tried (even ringing a friend to bring another spanner), but the flat was fixed too tightly. Green Flag turned up and did the job in 5 minutes - I apologised for being a wuss, but the guy's response was "Don't worry about it, in fact, call me first - it keeps me in a job!", which I thought was kind of friendly.

I would recommend home call, because if you don't have it, they charge you £72 to come out to within a mile of your home. Ouch.

I've just swapped from RAC to Green Flag, too - it was £30 cheaper for far more!

Have spoken to dh and will ring and get quote. Our RAC renewal is £144 pounds That's with a £25 discount for no call out last year. Ridiculous.

yup - had it as part of my car insurance and both times I had to use them they were very prompt and helpful.

do you bother with personal cover. that means you are covered in any car you are driving or are a passenger in. Or do you just cover yourself in your own car.
Have always had personal cover but never had the need to use it. Am wondering if i'm just wasting my money.

I've used them and found them excellent..i think they use a network of call out garages rather than Green men ...they even fetched a 4x4 out of our garage when the key dechipped and it was immobilised and needed specialist equipment and a team to move as you couldn't push it without damage...

Green Flag are now a subsidiary of Royal Bank of Scotland (just a fact - not a very interesting one I grant you, but one anyway)!!

Actually not that great. It took 1.75 hours for their bloke to come out when I'd broken down with just me and 3mo ds in the car on a quiet country lane. Fortunately a lovely policeman had offered to wait with me as it was getting dark and unsavoury blokes had been approaching me to offer "help".

And then they were going to take us back to our old address even though I'd told the woman on the phone that we'd moved.

Grrr! Cheap though.

They all have their occasional problems. Took the AA 4 hours to get out to the MD of a client I worked with which was a bit of a balls up as they were going through contract re-tendering exercise to keep the client's business at the time! (They still kept it though even after their apalling service.).

SaintGeorge · 20/07/2005 13:51

We alternate between the AA and RAC, although next year I intend to try Green Flag.

The 'new customer' prices are always cheaper so when our cover comes up for renewal we shop around for the best deal. Prefer personal cover as DH often drives MIL's car.

We have found they are all pretty much on a par for service times.

PeachyClair · 20/07/2005 14:52

DH used to work for an agent for Green Flag.

They all use the same agents (the people who actuallyb come find you) so your best bet is to go for the cheapest you can find, which is likely to be Tescos or someone like that!

Hope that helps

galaxy · 22/07/2005 22:45

Tescos is Green Flag and the comment about they all use the sameis not strictly true.

Green Flag use an independent network. AA and RAC use their own patrols but as back up, use independents which may or may not be the same ones that are on Green Flag network.
