Ok so my dh bought a dog of a car in march, a range rover which eats petrol quicker than we can fill it up (amongst other things!) it was a dream of his to own one but its a bit of a nightmare really!
previously we had a vw passat estate which was quite nice.

he has a week off work to find a replacement car!!!
have been looking at a mercedes ml or c or e class estate or maybe an audi a6 estate

anyone any experience of these ?

what do you have and what do you think of it?

what should we consider?
we're both finally fed up

volvos have climate control so you set the temp and the car keeps the temp at that level whether for heating or A/C

It does have regualar A/C as well

fishfinger · 18/07/2005 22:34

we have a merc ml

fishfinger · 18/07/2005 22:35

w hat do you want to know?
eats up pertol but sh gets it through work

Janh · 18/07/2005 22:37

DH used to have a Peugeot 406 and that had climate control too, but was a PITA. AC just as good but simpler so less to go wrong

mrspink27 · 18/07/2005 22:45

fishfinger .. do you know how many miles to the gallon your ml does? and is it petrol or diesel?

We have a Toyota Avensis Estate, and love it. Great on the fuel - went from Worcester to Exmouth on ¼ tank of fuel which would be about £10ish.

BadHair · 18/07/2005 22:50

FWIW I have a diesel Renault Scenic, which is perfect in terms of space, comfort, fuel and odd little cubby holes to hide stuff in. Used to have a MK1 Mondeo estate which would have been fabulous if it wasn't such a knackered old shed. Front seats were like comfy old armchairs and the Boot was huge - we got a double wardrobe and chest of drawers in there last year. Assume the new ones are as good or better.

Though it has to be said that I doubt either car is in the same class as Mercs and Audis in terms of luxury branding!

Dp says he'd go for either a C or E class Merc. But he is a man who hankers after an original Mini Cooper so his opinion of cars might not be the same as yours.

mrspink27 · 18/07/2005 23:05

bad hair, if the truth be told i would perform unspeakable favours to be the owner of an original mini cooper
i dont really like the ml shape, and i am edging towards an e or c class merc.
hadnt considered a toyota, but might be worth a look.
our range rover gets through atleast £60 a week on petrol and thats only round town and a few trips of 10 miles here and there,

dh hates renault scenic with a passion, dont know why! i think it is the quality dh is after and the fuel economy and the mod cons... and he just wants everything!!!

We have a V70 2.5l 20V which is a great family car.. but (KTKangamum please dont read this) its very very dull. Around 25 mpg, pull horse trailer and caravans most days, 90K miles, just keeps going.. It can be quick if you want.. but mostly it just keeps going in a 'my dad used to have a volvo' sort of way.

If we have a good year I am going to buy dw one of the new Discoverys, which I think are great!!

zenia · 18/07/2005 23:30

Audi A4 Quatro Sport - GORGEOUS!

RTKangaMummy · 18/07/2005 23:35

anteater

But you should have got one like mine with geartronic etc.

  • all the toys
zenia · 18/07/2005 23:37

do you mean Tiptronic? I have that + everything else - not boasting of course!

cas73 · 18/07/2005 23:39

Anteater - we testdrove the new discovery and the Volvo XC90, and, unless you really need a serious 4x4, the Volvo drives much better (and I personally think it looks better if you live in a city...). Hence we are now in the process of buying a XC90....

cas73 · 18/07/2005 23:40

Zena - Audi calls it triptronic and Volvo geartronic.

RTKangaMummy · 18/07/2005 23:41

NO geartronic is a gear box that can either be an automatic or you flick the knob and it is a manual

so you can change gears etc if you want ie for off roading and 4 x4 driving or just for fun

it has a trip computer too but most catrs have them with mpg and average speed etc etc temp outside etc

zenia · 18/07/2005 23:41

No way - The Discovery is much classier.

zenia · 18/07/2005 23:42

Yes - thats called TIPTRONIC

zenia · 18/07/2005 23:43

SORRY - didn't get the message about VOLVO calling it GEARTRONIC.

RTKangaMummy · 18/07/2005 23:47

I can forgive you, just

cas73 · 18/07/2005 23:48

OUr shortlist was the landrover and the volvo. Landrover because of the "name" and the fact that it is classy, and Volvo because of all the gadgets and cause many people recommended it to us. TBH, I didn't expect to like the volvo as much, but we thought we'd give it a go. The discovery felt it was "rocking" a bit as it probably is one of the tallest cars out there! (we didn't try the top of the range though - we tried the approx 40k one).

RTKangaMummy · 18/07/2005 23:55

oops

the rest went

RTKangaMummy · 18/07/2005 23:56

is it the D5 XC90 you are getting?

cas73 · 19/07/2005 00:03

If D5 refers to diesel engine, then no - we're getting the petrol one.

RTKangaMummy · 19/07/2005 00:12

Yes tis the diesel one

we are hiring the D5 one in few weeks for a week
