Playmobil for a 3 year old?

BornToFolk · 25/02/2010 14:51

I saw thisPlaymobil Unicorn Fairy palace and thought it would be perfect for my niece's 3rd birthday. She loves anything fairy/princess related and even though it says 4+ I thought it would be OK as she's quite a careful child and very into imaginative play.

I've had a closer look at the box though and it's got 217 pieces! Is it going to be too tiny and involved for a three year old? Is my SIL going to hate me as tiny pink bits of plastic get strewn across their house?

I can always stick it in the loft for Christmas/next birthday so give me honest opinions please!

tinksbabyis1 · 25/02/2010 17:26

paalce is a great reduved and looks so cute
go for it

MrsJohnDeere · 26/02/2010 10:40

Yes, the pieces will get everywhere but I bet she'll love it.
Ds1 got into Playmobil in a big way at 3yo. My 2yo plays with it too but mainly just throws the pieces around.

hazeyjane · 26/02/2010 10:45

We bought dds a playmobil castle for christmas, they are 3.11 and 2.9, they both love it, dd2 especially loves the figures and always takes one out with her.

MrsJohnDeere · 26/02/2010 10:46

Noah's Ark with all the animals is good for little ones, ime.

PureAsTheColdDrivenSnow · 26/02/2010 11:06

is your SIL the kind of person who would prefer you stuck to age recommendations?

It would be a shame if some of the tiny pieces got lost before she was old enough to really enjoy it.

BornToFolk · 26/02/2010 12:48

No, SIL has the same relaxed view of the age recommendations that I have! She's bought 3+ toys for my 2 year old before. And she's not fussy about mess...I just thought 217 bits of pink plastic is enough to try anyone's patience...

I think I'll go with it. If the tiny bits are too tiny (and annoying!) for now, they can always be put away but she'll still to play with the castle and the larger figures and unicorns.

then I'd go for it

I can't wait for playmobile (DS is only 2) but I'm the kind of person who's picky about ages for toys (try not to be!!)

Having said that, if someone wanted to buy him the Playmobile hospital for his 3rd Birthday I wouldn't say no

BadGardener · 26/02/2010 17:55

I've seen it suggested on here that you can superglue some of the tiny bits so they don't get lost.

belgo · 26/02/2010 17:57

playmobil is great but the girly stuff fairies etc is a bit boring. We gave dd1 the playmobil campervan at age 3 and 3 years later it is still very popular.

belgo · 26/02/2010 17:58

and I would put the tiniest bits away until she is older.

PureAsTheColdDrivenSnow · 26/02/2010 17:59

[notes correct spelling of playmobil]

BornToFolk · 26/02/2010 19:28

[puts Playmobil hospital on my christmas list...}

yes.. it'll be for DS.. honestly [shift look]

I have boys and went a bit OTT on buying Playmobil. They have never really taken to it - getting a bit better now they are almost 7 and 5, but it's not their favourite.

wishingchair · 02/03/2010 13:48

Playmobil is fantastic. My 3 year old and 7 year old both love it. It is something that they will enjoy for a long long time

wishingchair · 02/03/2010 13:49

plus depends on the child - my 2 dds love the princesses, just got mermaids, but also got fire engines, vet, dinosaurs. ALL are played with every single day.

teddymummy · 02/03/2010 17:01

Playmobil is great but be warned about the millions of tiny bits! We have a range of stuff- animal clinic, vets, ambulance, helicopter etc. The campervan is lovely and they all play with it. (7 and 4)
Children can make up so many imaginary games with it, and I find mine mix up other toys with it so for example the farm animals are transported in the aeroplane and then rescued in the ambulance!

teddymummy · 02/03/2010 17:02

Another bit of advie- put it together before you give it to the child- it can take a long time to put all the building bits together and the child might get frustrated waiting ( and the adult even more so!)

SoMuchToBits · 02/03/2010 17:05

Ds and are great fans of the stuff. I think most 3 year olds could cope with it, but maybe put some of the tiny bits away to start with.

If your ds is 2, you could start off getting some Playmobil 123 for you him to play with.

SoMuchToBits · 02/03/2010 17:06

And agree with teddymummmy about putting it together for them when they are v young. Some of the buildings take hours to put together. Ds is now 9 and loves building the stuff, but a 3 year old would get frustrated and bored with it.
