my (as cheap and cheerful as they get) steam generator iron has died. It's still pumping steam out.....but the soleplate isn't getting hot.

I have nearly £60 of argos vouchers (ok they're the DS's Christmas and birthday ones which they've totally forgotten about ) - and some money from my Uncles estate.

Have been using H's "normal" iron and hate it - I need a new steam generator.

Got my last one because it was the cheapest available, but obviously have a little more money to spend this time.

Looking through them all and I notice that some have stainless steel, some have ceramic and one or two have aluminium - which is the best????? (and why?)

oh and I must apologise for such an incredibly boring subject at this time on a Friday night

The best is ceramic without a doubt.

I have a lovely new iron and it cost £45, which was more than I intended but I think it was worth it - Phillips with ceramic soleplate.

Not a generator tho - I did have one but couldn't get on with it at all and ended up taking it back!

thank Clary - I am the opposite, treated myself to this steam generator one 2yrs or so ago and now hate "normal" ones

Buying irons used to be so simple - you just went to the shop and bought an iron - now they're all so different it seems you actually need to know what you're talking about

After years of Tefal which I loved I bought a Bosch iron.

Tefal had a ceramic soleplate, Bosch had a palladium glissee soleplate, it is shiny and oh my God the number of times I have had to clean it is ridiculous.

I hate it, admittedly the iron is amazing at cutting through creases but I am sick of cleaning the plate and if I don't it marks the clothes.

I will be getting a steam generator iron, a Tefal one and I will be checking the soleplate.
