iPhone or eTrex Venture® HC for geocaching?

First a thick question:

If you have no mobile signal, would a GPS still work?

And a tricky question:

would the eTrex basemap be uploadable onto a garmin satnav? and would there be any point in doing that? (our garmin satnav currently has hopelessly out of date maps).

I meant to say "would a GPS device such as he eTrex still work".

We took our garmin out today and used it in conjunction with the i phone,

We tend to use the garmin for navigating but the iphone for details of the cache.

Out here my iphone reception cannot be relied on.
