protector for dressing table and something to line the drawers that is not scented

I have recently got a gorgeous oak dressing table but before I start putting tons of stuff into it I want to protect it from getting marks etc on the top, any ideas?? Trying to think of something a little more modern than lacy bits to put things on.

Also I wanted to to a similar thing inside the drawers but all I can find are flowery scented things. I love Cath K. but for my bedroom wanted something a little different.
The only other thing I can think of is getting some material and cutting in to size.

For the top a sheet of glass cut to size? My mum has this. It shows the dust more than natural wood but then it completely protects the surface.

To line the drawers - what about some very good quality wrapping paper, the kind you get in invidual sheets as opposed to the rolls of cheap thin "shiny" stuff? Or maybe wallpaper if you could find some nice offcuts?
