Oi! GEOCACHERS AND HIKERS!! Can I get your advice on GPS devices?

Our situation is thus:

We love walking/hiking and have just started geocaching.

We have a "Garmin Nuvi 300" car satnav, which seems kind of OKish for the purposes of geocaching...It's slightly unwieldy to hold, and I kept accidentally touching the touchscreen, and it also has a short battery life.

What do the hiking GPS gadgets do that a car satnav doesn't? I've been looking at the Garmin Etrex and Geko, but I'm not sure that I could justify the £££ as I don't understand what they do!

Can you load all the geocaches on to them from your PC? Or is there a way of doing that with my current satnav?

Would one of these Memory Maps" make using my satnav easier/better? Would it even be compatible?

Help!

I have absolutley no ideas or help to offer, but have just read a novel that featured geocachers and am stunned to see it mentioned - I read the book and though 'oo that sounds good but I bet it's not true'!!!!

Ha! What's the novel?

'The Dead Place' by Stephen Booth. My aunt passes me on all her books - she has a bit of a blood and guts penchant it seems! It's ok, i wouldn;t rush out to buy it but you might enjoy the geocache references!
