Might be an idea to mention what storage / duration you might wish to record.
I've seen models record onto mini-DV (tape), DVD, memory card (eg miniSD) and hard drive.
I've seen one which had both memory card and hard drive, but I'm only "looking" at present and would want to go for some combination which didn't depend on just a hard drive, if poss (because DVDs or memory cards can be removed and a fresh one inserted if one were away on hols and had 'filled it up').
Which? magazine has done some reviews too (just found it when I double-checked what mini-DV was !)
See their site: www.which.co.uk/reviews/camcorders
It doesn't show the ratings given by Which? subscribers, but to be fair, the numbers of readers with a particular choice can be under 50, compared with some other product where thousands are users, so ratings are sometimes hit and miss... It does offer you searches based on price, brand, memory, and zoom/weight. You just won't see their choice of 4 'best buys'. You can sort by price and by brand/model though.
(Have to admit that I used to subscribe to Which? in the 90s, but because they always carried cars, as well as a separate motoring magazine, and seemed to repeat comparisons of products on a 2-3 year cycle, and final straw was when they asked me to increase standing order about four-fold as I'd been paying the same fee for maybe 8 years and they wanted a lot more per quarter!)
