Unlocking a mobile phone - Where do I go?

We have won a new pay as you go mobile phone in a text to win competition. The phone is a Sony Ericsson on Voadaphone.

My current phone is on T-Mobile and I want to put my T-mobile SIM into the Vodaphone phone. Vodaphone will unlock the phone for £25 but I have been told that a small independant mobile phone shop should be able to do this for around £10-15.

Has anyone had this done - and if so where did you go ?

Local independent, Kayleigh - the guy had a boxful of little cable things - that was to unlock a Vodafone. It was supposed to be £15 but I only had £10 notes and so did he so he did it for £10 (it takes about 30 seconds, money for old rope).

I believe there are codes you can tap in to do it yourself but what they are and where you find them I have no idea.

thanks janh, now i know it is possible will wait till weekend and have a look locally. I thought vodaphone had a bloody cheek charging £25 but as i was working today and all the phone shops in the city are vodaphone/orange/carphone warehouse etc I thought I had no choice

thanks again X

free here

seriously, i unlocked my phone (nokia 3100) with it yesterday

WideWebWitch · 05/07/2005 14:13

£25 just to unlock it? Blimey, what a rip off! Have you googled? Can't believe there isn't an answer out there.

WideWebWitch · 05/07/2005 14:15

here but I haven't looked at the sites

Kayleigh · 05/07/2005 14:19

lilaclotus that site doesn't do vodaphone

www, i googled this yesterday and there are quite a few sites that charge. i tried one and it sent me a code for a different mobile. so that was a waste. the site i linked to generates the codes for free and it worked straight away.

Kayleigh · 05/07/2005 14:20

ooohh www thanks - will check those out

lilaclotus · 05/07/2005 14:22

it does for nokia, came up with all the networks for that, it might depend on which make you have

lilaclotus · 05/07/2005 14:22

ahh ok. hmmm. i'm sure there would be other sites like that out there,.

serenity · 05/07/2005 14:31

I went to an independant phone shop on my local high street, and they unlocked the phone in about 10 seconds - cost me £10.

GeorginaA · 05/07/2005 20:45

Have recently unlocked my old nokia with a free site. I chose the download option rather than the website online version and made sure it couldn't access the internet (as I didn't like the idea that my IMEI (sp?) code would be known by them).

GeorginaA · 05/07/2005 20:46

meant to say - you only get x number of goes typing in the codes yourself. Then the phone locks up and you have to go to a shop to unlock it with the wires...

Kayleigh · 05/07/2005 23:05

have looked at the unlocking sites and it looks like the phone i have has to be unlocked with a cable, and not codes. Typical !!! So i either have to buy the cable or go into a shop. Will check out local phone shops at the weekend.

Hi Kayleigh, when I sold on my old phone earlier this year I found unlocking services on ebay. It worked for mine, and for 99p is worth a go IMO! phone unlocking

Still wanting to come to a meet up with you again soon if thats ok?

FlounceyFlossam · 05/07/2005 23:23

Just seen last post. Check and see if your phone is listed first.

FlounceyFlossam · 05/07/2005 23:38

Ahem, ooops, just read the ebay advert. You have to send it off for 6.00 to get it unlocked. Urm, up to you whether you want to or not. What a pain you won this make of phone!

Kayleigh · 05/07/2005 23:41

Hi FlounceyFlossam. Why are you Flouncey ?
I can't believe I won this and now i am having to pay to use the bloody thing. Wouldn't be so bad if i could just do it on a code. No way am i sending someone on ebay the phone to unlock. Will just have to troll around the shops
