My laptop is 2 years old and no longer works wirelessly and I have to hold a cable in to connect - v frustrating and takes ages.

I only go online to MN, ebay bits and bobs, online shopping etc. This was just a cheapo fromPC World - is that all I need again? What's a notebook (they seem cheap!) it's taken me ages to type this!! DoI just go out tomorrow and for cheap spend #300??

Really depends on whether you think you'll b happy with the smaller screen (eg around 10" vs laptops with 12"/14"/15.6") and fiddly little keyboard.

Personally I hate the touchpad or thumb-prodder and plug in USB mouse (and because I have grown used to bigger keyboards, multimedia keyboards, or illuminated ones) and USB keyboard...

Finally, worth making a search for 'laptop' and another for 'netbook' (perhaps more often discussed under "geeky stuff").

It is probably worth considering machines running Windows 7 (as you won't need to upgrade from Vista yourself).
