Undecided about mattresses... what would you suggest?!

I have a very cheap mattress - came with the bedstead, and 4 years later, it's decidedly knackered...!

DH and I are arguing over 2 mattresses in particular. (But I'm open to other suggestions!! )

One is an Ikea mattress, the favang, and the other is a Bensons one, called Sleep to Live.

I like the Sleep to Live - it's got 2 different firmnesses (is that a word?!), so you do an assessment, and it's profiled for each sleeper. I like this one as I need a firmer mattress than DH due to back issues. They are expensive, but for the basic one, my friend (who works at Bensons) can sell me one for £665 (normally £700) or the next one up which is thicker, for £945 (normally £1050). Also, it's guaranteed for 10 years. (here's a link)

DH likes the Ikea one because it's cheaper,(£159) but I understand we'd have to change our bedstead for it. Thing is, I really don't like their bedsteads - we have a lovely wrought metal sprung one, yes it was cheap, but I like it!

At the moment, we have a sprung mattress, but I think it's pretty safe to say we'll need to change to some form of memory foam thingy.

What would you suggest/recommend?

We bought one of these last summer. It is fantastic!

We did have our previous mattress for well over 10 years, and it was knackered, and so were we! I regularly had lower back ache, and in the end some of the springs were a little bit more noticeable than was comfortable.

We splashed out on the memory foam, and it did take DH a little while to get used to - or maybe that was the memory foam pillow? But we wouldn't go back. Don't skimp on a mattress - you spend too much time on it!

We love our tempur mattress.

They are quite expensive but well worth it. And we got ours in the sale from Feather and Black. Just had a quick look at their website and they currently have 25% off Tempur mattresses.

If you aren't sure though Tempur do free 60 day trial so you see if it's right for you.

I have a back problem and we got a firmess rating 9 (firm as they can ba so we were told!) it is made by sealy and i think 'posturpedic gold' or something. was £1k, but well worth it for a decent nights sleep. our memory foam silent night one was awful and sagged terribly.

Vi-spring - costs a lot £1500-£5000 in the sale, mine cost £2k 9 years ago. Guaranteed for 20 years, mine still looks and feels like new.

Yeah, we are kind of on a budget though,

DH is warming up to the Sleep to Live one, so that's aiming for about a £600ish budget.

My only concern which now pops up is reliability/quality...

My mum bought a cushiontop mattress, Layezee or something, from Argos, and she's had it for about 2, maybe 3 years. And it's now going lumpy. You can't turn it, because of the top.

Would I honestly be better off going for a good sprung one, and buying a separate foam topper?!

Why don't you get a memory foam mattress topper which have a firmer-feel, but still offer great support (re: your back). They've got to be cheaper than getting a whole new mattress, surely?

parkj83 · 13/01/2010 09:36

That has crossed my mind - at the end of the day, though, I do need a new mattress - it's just not supportive enough.

On average, I've woken up every 2 hours for the past 3 nights. I can't take it any more!

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I think it might just be best to go into a local shop and try out a few to see what you like. It's such a personal thing, soft/firm, price etc... not easy!

We have a Feather & Black own brand memory foam, very good & currently in sale.
