Classy naming day present - any ideas?

Can anyone suggest a classy present for a (non religious) naming day? I have been asked to be the 'mentor/guardian' of a little girl (2 years old) and am trying to find something nice to mark the occasion. Am trying to avoid egg cups and tankards! I saw some lovely stained glass ornaments in notonthehighstreet.com but they are out of stock! Any suggestions gratefully received.

We had a naming ceremony for our dc's some one got them a 'me to you bear' silver plated bubble blower, it's gorgeous.
They also got a lovely picture in a frame with their name and name meaning on it, one of their names has a religious meaning so they had his date of birth put on instead. They also got gorgeous blankets with their names one.
Some one also bought us a big plate which everyone signed and then I baked in the oven to seal the ink. Which is a lovely keepsake.
We also did a book which every guest had their own page to write something in, then we placed a picture of them with the dc on it too, which is a fantastic way to help recall the day.
Hope this helps.

We had a naming ceremony for DD (nearly 2) recently.

Her mentor-type people got her

  • nice attractive editions of books the giver had loved as a girl with a personal inscription about why she'd chosen these books
  • a Bunnykins plate/bowl/etc. set (again, because the giver identified it strongly with his own childhood and wanted to give it as a gift on that basis)
  • a blank set of nesting Russian dolls with the suggestion that DD paint one each year

Other nice naming day presents we've had for one or other DC

  • books
  • bookends (handy when you've just been given lots of books)
  • bracelets for DD
  • some nice age-appropriate toys (less appropriate for a mentor/guardian who I'd think would give something more long-lasting)
