Alternator Workshop! Message in my Golf - how much?

I know this is a stupid question, but from time to time lately, this message flashes up on my little normal Golf.

What is this?

Will it be expensive?

ours cost £400 a couple of years ago. But it was more expensive as they had to drain and recharge our airconditioning as part of the job.
