It's made of plastic and it seems quite sturdy for little ones even though it says from 4 year old. We are going on a long long plane journey (about 24 hours door to door) and I need to decide if this is worth it. Or should I just get a portable DVD player? (I'm afraid that the battery of the portable DVD won't last more than one movie, but I could take loads of aa batteris for the the leapster..??)

sorry I don't think a 2 yr old would have a clue what to do with a leapster and cause lots of frustration as you will need to do everything for them! A portable dvd player, a colouring book would give you more peace and quiet....

yep,my dd at 2y6m old could play the leapster(original one),
TBH the batteries would probably last as long in a dvd player!
i would go for the colouring books/story books, cheaper and prob more entertaining,
