bike panniers - should I buy left or right?

I have found the panniers I want but only really want to buy one, possibly buying the other side at a later date when I have the money.

So my question is really which side would be the best side to have a single pannier? Left or right?

It sounds like a daft question I know, but I just can't decide!

Yes I do. But wouldn't cars give me a wider berth if I had a pannier on the right? Do you see the dilemma!

My son said I should get left because I am right handed and it will help with balance....

I would think pavement side, incase of leaning round to reach for something out of it etc.
Unless it's really massive I can't imagine you'll get a noticeably wider berth
