One that makes the outside of the bread golden brown without drying out the centre of the bread?

use extra thick bread..

Budget? Everyone will say Dualit I guess. Don't get teh stainless steel (look) Tefal one - ours blew up in less than a month

beatie · 17/05/2005 12:28

Hmm - probably not a Dualit budget. Are they really THAT good though?

No idea beatie - never been lucky enough to have one. I got a silver/stainless steel Russell Hobbs one half price in Sainsbury's recently (£12). Seems fine.

pre-children and Pre-marriage, DH was very into buying expensive kitchen gadgets. Kitchen Aid blender, Panasonic Bread maker. He may be persuadable over the toaster if EVERYONE said the Dualit is the only way to make decent toast.

Currently have a stainless steel Russell Hobbs and don't find it fine... although it may once have been fine. Perhaps we just need a new one.

Ah!. Hmm, well this is a new one...

Fio2 · 17/05/2005 12:51

the grill is good

we have a sheep one that 'baaaaaa's" HTH

beatie · 17/05/2005 12:57

I think gas grills make the best toast but we have an electric grill and it too dries out the bread. We usually use uncut thick sliced bread too.

My dualit is crap at toast, it is either underdone or burnt, or done one side only, totally unpredictable!

mouseman · 17/05/2005 14:29

We have had our dualit for about 10 years now and I love it - yummy toast and the best toasted cheese sandwiches on earth.

alibubbles · 17/05/2005 14:52

I think mine was made on a friday afternoon, really should have taken it back by now!

spacedonkey · 17/05/2005 15:10

I have a dualit 2 slice toaster and it makes the best toast ever - evenly toasted and hot

Hulababy · 17/05/2005 20:56

Love our Dualit too Makes fab toast!

wheresmyfroggy · 17/05/2005 20:59

Dualit all the way

vickiyumyum · 17/05/2005 21:02

krups toater from john lewis is the best one we've had yet. it was about £45 only does 2 slices at a time but the best toaster i've had.
i had a dualit in pink that i sold on ebay for more than i paid for it! didn't like it as kept burning the toast as no pop up thing and kept forgetting to turn the timer down!

beatie · 18/05/2005 09:26

Thanks everyone. I might go and check out that Krups toaster.

Funny enough I was thinking this. We had a nice one for a couple of years from Debenhams, but it blew up I bought a cheap and cheerful one from ASDA for £12 and it is crap. It barely fits one piece of sliced bread in each slot and either burns or doesn't cook one side of the bread.
I want a new toaster that fits all types of bread, crumpets, pitta etc and cooks it well

bunny2 · 18/05/2005 09:52

me too. My Russel Hobbso ne is broken. What a timely thread!

Satine · 18/05/2005 09:56

Another vote for Dualit (you soon get to know how far to turn the dial to get perfect toast so the lack of pop up mechanism doesn't matter). They last for ever.

bunny2 · 18/05/2005 09:56

mine didnt - cost a fortune to get repaired so I binned it the second time it broke

TwinSetAndPearls · 18/05/2005 18:29

Dualit. I fought a bitter custody battle to keep mine!

marthamoo · 18/05/2005 18:42

Don't buy a DeLonghi - they are poopooplops.

Friend has a Dualit and swears by it.
