Grobags for a June baby - how many of which tog rating do I actually need?

I'm a bit lost on this one...

DD was born in November so it was easy, I just got 2 x 2.5 tog bags and we were sorted. By the time she needed a thinner bag we were ready for the next size and I just got one of each thickness.

I've still got 2 x 2.5 tog bags, but do I really need to get 2 x 1.0 tog and 2 x 0.5 tog bags? [stingy] Is there another combo I can get away with?

Dd1 was born in 2006 when there was a heatwave, we had a 1 tog sleeping bag, and adjusted how many clothes, down to a nappy if really hot, just a tshirt etc.

Some nights it was so hot we just did without the sleepingbag, and just tucked a sheet (one of ours cut down), if we felt she needed it.

It depends how hot the room gets in summer - if it is regularly over about 25 degrees then the 0.5tog would be a good idea. If it is 24 degrees or less for the most part then you could get away with just using 1 togs. I only used 0.5tog bags when we went abroad on holiday and just used 1 tog ones at home. Why not get the 1 tog ones just now and see how the weather does this summer - if it is a hot one you can always get the lighter ones later on.

When buying mine (for DTs, so potentially four bags!) I got told that there is such a slight difference between 0.5 and 1 (well, 0.5 to be exact ) that it's more cost effective to get the 0.5 as you can always add an extra vest (or sleeves) if it gets a bit chilly.

slumbersacs are a bit cheaper and you can get 2 x 1tog bags for £25.

Have a look at the Bambino Merino ones. My DH bought them and although fairly expensive, the same bag is for all seasons and from 2 months to 2 years. Would never personally bother with anything else now. Wash beautifully.

We have some 0.5 gro bags for summer, the room gets over 24 degrees quite often. I just put the dc's in t-shirt bodysuits when its hot. On very hot days I put the gro bag them when I go to bed so they don't get chilly in the night.

We have a small fortunes worth of different sized / tog gro-bags in our house. But I think they have been worth every penny.

Do you have a TK Maxx near you? They often have gro-bags at half price.

Thanks all! It sounds like I can get away with just 1 thickness of bags then, grand. Now I just have to decide which

The room does get quite warm (it's south facing) but I don't think it regularly goes over 25 degrees. I'm not in the UK so delivery charges make me reluctant to place more than one order, but I think I'll risk it.

I wish I'd heard about the Bambino Merino bags when I was pregnant with DD, they sound fab and it would have saved me a fortune. Oh well.

Thanks for the link to the slumbersacs they look good but I'm afraid I don't really like their choice of fabrics

A handy tip i read on another thread was to put a cardigan underneath the grobag when they go to sleep, then you can slip the arms on if it gets a bit chilly.

norktasticninja · 04/05/2009 20:36

the delivery charge on 2 bags is 9 pounds 66. I don't remember it being that expensive with PFB

Good tip hazeyjane!

The lowest I had was a 1 tog (DD was Jan baby though). She spent most of last summer in just a bodysuit with the grobag on if there was a nip in the air. She is quite a hot child though.
