DD is 30months and about ready for a bed. I am inclined to just get a standard single bed as she is quite tall and I think a toddler bed would only last about a year. Plus want her to be used to a single bed as we go away a lot and that tends to be what hotels will offer.

Has anyone any advice on what they did? Best bed to get/shop to get from?

Not sure but think may need bedguard too

any single bed will do but i would advise a bed guard (mothercare do some fold down ones) because an ordinary single bed will be a fair bit higher off the ground than a toddler bed (these are very low).

as your dd is used to being in a cot i think the bed guard would be helpful and reduce the chance of her falling out and waking herself up in the night.

Get a bed guard for peace of mind.

And get ready for the pyjama prowling! A very cute time...

I put myy DD in a single duvan bed - quite high - and had a bed rail. She was 2yr 3months old. never fell out and never had a problem. We dismantled cot in front of her and decorated her room and got new bedding etc and presented it to her as a treat. We have just moved her from that room to the bigger spare room and she's ina doub;e bed now with no rail, she fell out once last week and has been fine. we decorated the room again and got he rnew things to make it feel special ( need smaller room for next baby)

We still have a gate on her door as we have VERY steep stairs and don't want her waking in the night and wandering out of room as she is a floor below us now.

Good Luck

Thanks for all the posts. I'm going to get a bedguard.

Gillyan I was really anxious if a single bed would be too high off the floor but you have put my mind at rest. We too have steep stairs and have gates at top and bottom so that will be ok if/when she gets out of bed.

I love the idea of her getting involved in buying the bed/bedding etc etc. My DD would love that. She reminds me every day how she used to be a baby with a highchair That has recently gone.

Good luck with the new baby

My ds went into an adult bed at 2.6 we didn't buy a bed guard we put his cot mattress on the floor next to it in case he fell out - he fell out once last month when he was 3 - obviously we had long since moved his cot mattress.
