fitting car seat with lap seat belt

We have just been offered a VW Passat by my parents but I don't know how we can fit the middle car seat. The middle seat only has a lap type seat belt which seems like it wouldn't be safe with any of the car seats we have (newborn, middley one and big one for 8mo, 22mo and 4yr old.)

Can you get a proper three point seat belt fitted into a car that only has a lap belt?
Or are there car seats that can be safely fitted with just a lap belt?

Our old car was a fiat multipla so these are new problems for us.

Thanks for any ideas...

have you checked you can fit all 3 seats across the back?
that'd be my main concern!

You can get seats that can be fitted with only the lap belt, don't know which ones tho you would have to google it. Or you can have a 3 point belt fitted.

i had a britax freeway which is specifically designed to be fitted with lap belt. it was as secure if not more than the other three pointers i had, the way the belt went really held seat to car. dont think they are still availbale new but i got mine second hand off ebay for tne quid.

Might be worth calling the ladies at the Essex County Council In-Car Road Safety Team - they have a lot of experience with different car seats on the market and could probably tell you what, if any, seats are available for purchase in the UK that are fitted with just a lap belt and what the safety implications of that are. You can see their details here

If you are going to keep the car for any length of time I'd get a 3 point seatbelt fitted, as your two younger ones will quite soon outgrow any seats you find to fit the 2 pointer and will want a highback booster.

I'm assuming that this car doesn't by any chance have isofix points anywhere in it? (probably not if it doesn't have all 3 pt belts)

Thank you very much everyone. I am going to look into putting the seat belt in. It may need bolting to the roof - but hey it's a 10 year old car so it won't devalue it too much. If there are any problems (and perhaps in the meantime) I will look at getting a britax.

Thanks again.
