Babycarrier/sling for big 6 month old

verygreenlawn · 09/04/2009 10:57

I'm currently carrying 6 month old ds3 round either in my arms or in a front carrier every day - almost the whole day - and it's killing my neck/shoulders. Can anyone recommend a suitable carrier for him? He's a big boy - I love to carry him round all day but I don't think my body can take much more! I don't mind if he's on the back or front of me btw - thanks.

The Ergo is good for larger babies and toddlers. Or a wrap sling (woven not stretchy) in a back carry position? TBH I found back carries a bit terrifying without someone to help, but DS1 was a v wriggly child. May have better luck with DS2

Try a MeiTai, like a BabyHawk - you can do front, hip or back carries. Back carrying is a bit scary at first, but you soon get the hang of it. Theres some fab videos on YouTube on how to do them

I carry my 2.10 yr old still, and it is very comfy

babyphat · 09/04/2009 11:21

i have a pretty heavy 7 month old (around 22lb) and we are mostly using a babyhawk mei tai. i mostly front carry in it, it's very comfy

when i need her out the way on my back (ie if i'm hoovering!) i use a woven wrap, mine is a borrowed didymos but you can get cheaper ones.

personally i find a mei tai easier to pop on and off, and a bit cooler to wear on hot days/indoors. but either would be good options that should be versatile and last a long time (and can be used for front or back carries)

i got my mei tai from here and thought the service was great

once you have one, lots of good demos on youtube, or you might like to try going to a slingmeet for tips

Thank you, they all look lovely - very tempted by the babyhawk especially. I like the idea of something I can use right now for him on the front and then adapt for use on the back when he's ready (not ready to let go of all that kissing the top of his head yet .... )

I still sometimes carry DS on my front, just for the head kissing

Check out the UKBabywearingSwap group on Yahoo to buy second hand

I have a Toddlerhawk (bigger version) - it's what DH is wearing on my profile pics. The sleepy DS on my back is in a TaiTasi

So cute!

i know just what you mean about head kissing, i miss dd when she's on my back

babyhawks are gorgeous, the only thing they lack is head support for if they fall asleep on your back, but that isn't a huge issue for me

CMOTdibbler · 09/04/2009 13:16

Some do - they have a bit that comes up behind their neck - you can see them here. DS loves to sleep on me, but hates sleep hoods, and the TH neck support works fine

foxytocin · 09/04/2009 13:21

if you think you would like a babyhawk, i have one which i am willing to sell.

verygreenlawn · 09/04/2009 14:05

Aagh, I wish I'd seen that foxytocin - I've just ordered one new!!

I was showing Ds2 the pictures on the site linked to earlier and he said he thought ds3 would love love love it (his words) so we were a bit naughty and ordered it on impulse. I'm a sucker for baby stuff anyway ....

What patterns did you get ?

cheesesarnie · 09/04/2009 14:07

ergos are great.im only little but comfortably carried my ds2 till he was a huge 2 years and something.can be used back and front-i found back easier as im short.

verygreenlawn · 09/04/2009 14:19

I've ordered the olive green one - liked all the colours, but some were out of stock and tbh olive green looked a good colour for the inevitable sicking up it will suffer (he's very sicky due to reflux, one of the reasons he likes to be carried nice and upright). Though it's washable from the looks of it? (We used a navy blue baby bjorn for all three dcs when they were little and while I loved having them close to me I got a bit tired of mopping sick off it).

Very excited - can't wait! Thank you all for the recommendations!

cmotdibbler, mine has that but it doesn't come very high on my baby, not sure if it's how i'm wearing or length of baby...

foxytocin · 09/04/2009 14:32

sigh. will have to list it somewhere then.

CMOTdibbler · 09/04/2009 14:38

The olive green looks lovely, and they are machine washable !

anchovies · 09/04/2009 14:43

Foxytocin, what colour is it? I've also got a big 6 month old who is being carried everywhere! Had a hugabub but feels very unsafe now!

babyphat · 09/04/2009 14:58

ooh it's gorgeous! very washable, mine dried overnight last night no probs.

i ordered mine from that site at 2pm and it arrived the next morning! was v impressed. also liked that you could send back things even if washed - my first sling (a ring one) didn't suit me but i was stuck with it as the little one had already sicked up on it (a frequent occurence)

foxytocin · 09/04/2009 15:19

It is blue mini calaveras on one panel and the other is called loteria. the straps are chocolate brown. it also has a toy loop as an extra.

It was a custom and is in like new condition. the fabrics have meaning in Mexican folklore (calaveras) and 20thC culture (loteria) I can tell you about it if you like

babyphat · 09/04/2009 15:24

foxy how much are you after for this? if anchovies doesn't want it i'd be interested. i actually have that loteria fabric in my sadly neglected sewing stash!

pls tell me about the meaning behind the fabric if you have time, i'd be v interested

babyphat · 09/04/2009 15:37
