Paperwork Storage

I am currently trying to de-clutter my home and my next job is paperwork. At the moment I have a number of shoe boxes storing all manner of bills, statements etc and they are kept above wardrobe, under the bed and all over the place!

I'd like to have everything in one place but don't really have enough space for a large filing cabinet. So I am wondering what others here store their paperwork in and how long do you keep before chucking out?

I use lever arch files and ringbinders. I keep a couple of years worth of bank statements, and one or two years worth of other bills only. I've got a file for our insurance stuff, one for pension stuff, one for bank statements, one for anything relating to dd (child benefit, tax credits, child minder etc) and another one with dividers in it which covers everything else. Takes up about half a metre of shelf space. I used to keep everything and had a 4 drawer filing cabinet, but was so scared of this monster falling on dd that I took drastic action to reduce the paper i kept. So far, I haven't missed anything I threw out.

I have a couple of those concertina type files. Similar destruction to what Biccy said
