I need a large playmat for my 6month old, we have a couple of baby gyms that were given to us at xmas etc but the bases are really thin, we have hardwood floors! Also he has learnt to roll recently and the one is too small, he's rolled off a couple of times and bumped his head!

Are there any playmats out there that are nice and thick/padded?? Hard to tell whats what when looking on the web!

Really regretting not having carpet at the mo!

Have you considered getting a foam mat? We got one from Sainsbury's that's the numbers 1-9 and goes together as a jigsaw and covers an area about 1.5 x 1.5m when complete (its marked as "not suitable for 0-3 due to small parts", but I couldn't find any parts small enough to worry me - DD's given a few bits a good chew while teething and not managed to get anything off either).

I would say, though, that once DD could roll she was off and there was no stopping her short of putting her in a pen. We've got carpets but stayed in an appartment with parquet flooring when she was about 7 months - it only took about a day before she learnt to roll without banging her head. They do learn remarkably fast.

We have wood floors too and have this huuuuuge mat Ds won't sit still on it anymore so it's off to the NCT sale at the weekend, but it was brilliant while it lasted.

The foam mat sounds a good idea, I was considering something like a yoga mat but bigger obviously! Did you get that from sainsburys recently tangle? I'm aware once he starts crawling I won't be able to pin him down but I'm trying to avoid as many headbumps as poss along the way! He didn't roll over for a few days the first time he bumped his poor head!
