Your ideas for shoe storage please.

We are in the middle of renovating our porch and hall and as part of that are trying to declutter. We need somewhere to put shoes so they don't just end up in a heap in the hall. We have an under stairs cupboard/toilet but the door isn't suitable for an over door rack. We also don't have a huge amount of space.

Any ideas welcome.

I have a long basket form ikea that thye are all chucked into.
Ideally I would like shelves but I know my family wouldn't put them away neatly enough.

I wish I had a lid for it as it can pong a bit

JackieNo · 26/03/2009 16:07

Not cheap, but how about this? Certainly interesting!

northender · 26/03/2009 16:24

That is fab Jackie but probably too pricey. Also we'd probably be using it most for trainers or similar and the shoes in the pic look very dainty so don't know how ours would fit! Would be a talking point though.

ggirl I'd prefer something where they were hidden from view I think. I already do baskets for hats, scarves etc!

I use a veg rack on wheels. Got mine from a poundstretcher for about a fiver.

Insanity · 26/03/2009 16:32

They do a plastic shoe storage thing from IKEA.

Its quite thin and screws on the wall, you open it and slot your shoes in, you get 3 in a pack for around £22.

I have 2 behind the front door and one under the stairs. It fits 2 pairs of adult shoes in each but the kids amazingly can shove loads of shoes in one!

I shall look on the Ikea website and see if I can get you a link

Juwesm · 26/03/2009 16:41

We've got an IKEA one too. here are some of theirs.

purepurple · 26/03/2009 16:46

chuck them under the bed or the bottom of the wardrobe

bigTillyMint · 26/03/2009 16:49

We have a long basket from Ikea too - looks relatively attractive even when full!

We keep other pairs in the bedrooms - in hanging wardrobe storage / those Babord Ikea things.

Insanity · 26/03/2009 17:09

Cant find the one I have on the website, must be an instore thing.

northender · 26/03/2009 17:33

Thanksall, am liking the sound of the wall mounted one. Think we may have to take a trip to ikea (dh will love that!)

We got ours where all the shoe storage and shelves were in the show room. They come in white, red or black so keep a look out, cos at first I thought "whats this?".
Wasnt until I opened it and thought what a genius idea!

AlderTree · 27/03/2009 16:06

in our understairs cupboard we have a pine type rack which may originally have been one of those canvas covered `shelf type things from Argos. It fits along the backwall of the cupboard and we can get boots, trainers, adult and children's shoes on it.

We have a huge seagrass chest and bung them all in that. 'Nice' shoes go under bed/in wardrobe. The chest is for everyday shoes and slippers. Nobody in our house would be arsed to put shoes neatly in a rack every time they came in, sadly...

purpleduck · 27/03/2009 16:36

We have a floor to ceiling shoe cupboard that my dh built. It is shallow (just enough for a pair of shoes!), and the width of a regular door. Inside we have as many shelves as we could put in. Then we just close the door on them.

I hate shoes on display.

Heated · 27/03/2009 16:38

We have a small inglenook in the hall which makes it a pita to fit furniture. We bought Ikea this storage bench and coat hooks

If we had room we would have got this instead. GLTC also have nice hall furniture.

Heated · 27/03/2009 16:40

My link didn't work so trying again

Both the storage bench and coat hooks are in white btw.

jicky · 27/03/2009 16:43

We have a unit built in that holds wicker vegetable baskets - easy for children to bung shoes in and for us for trainers etc - 'best' adult shoes are kept in our wardrobe.

Insanity · 27/03/2009 20:11

bloss - YES! That is my shoe box, such a good discreet shoe box. Clever swedish folk!

Tangle · 27/03/2009 20:47

Insanity - is it this one?

We've got a similar dilema. We do manage to get most of them into the understairs cupboard, but they tend to stay there in a muddy heap so we can't put anything else in (hence the vacuum is currently in plain site...). Hmmm - methinks a shopping trip is called for. Poor DH

northender · 27/03/2009 23:51

Found www.aplaceforeverything.co.uk/shop/index.php?page=876&offset=15&ret=465 which I quite like, doesn't cover the shoes up but keeps them tidy and I think may fit in the porch rather than the hall. What do you think?

Do like those wall mounted ikea ones though.

That shoe tree thing looks so messy.
But I also hate shoes on display - they're not ornaments.
I love the sound of the floor-to-ceiling cupboard to put them in, but can't think of anywhere it could go in our house.
We have an armoire thing in our tiny hall for coats and theoretically shoes, but everyone tends to dump them on the floor.
Then there's a wicker basket with lid by the back door (actually in the kitchen) for when the kids come in that way.
Oh, and in the utility room there's a shoe cupboard thing for the rugby boots/trainers/cycling shoes. One of those things where the doors sort of hinge downwards.

Insanity · 28/03/2009 14:23

Tangle Yes thats them! You can have them stacked on top of each other or side by side. Very neat and tidy, not a shoe in sight, I could do with another pack and put some by the back door too.

lovecakes · 28/10/2009 01:19

i recently got a product called the flexi shoe rack from a website www.flexishoerack.co.uk

i got interested in it when i found out about its really clever removable shelves. now i can fit all of my shoes and boots in the shoe rack.

i could fit the shoe rack under the space in my wardrobe because it is flexible.

...oh, i almost forgot - i also keep my handbags in it! i really recommand it if you have limited space
