Any ideas for a 1 year old's birthday present?

My DS is one next month. We were going to buy him one of those Vtech walkers but he got a second-hand one the other week. Can anybody recommend anything for a one year old? Is there anything that your DC absolutely loved at that age? Thanks!
Yours unimaginatively, Baconsarnie x

plastic tea set.

SweetApril · 24/03/2009 13:03

What about a trike with a parent handle? DD had one for 1st birthday and loved it. Still loves it a year on. Before long we'll be able to take the handle off so she can pedal herself.

pebbles79 · 24/03/2009 13:07

Depends how much room you've got but my kids all loved a ball pool at that age.

ninedragons · 24/03/2009 13:10

A Fisher-Price garbage truck with coloured plastic balls that rattle around in the back when you push it along is a big hit with DD at the moment.

sazm · 24/03/2009 13:28

my lo had a walker that turned into a wee bike,he loved that, and my dd loved her wee push along car,

they both loved their ball pit too,

NellieTheEllie · 24/03/2009 13:30

Agree with Sweetapril. My Ds loved his trike.

BonsoirAnna · 24/03/2009 13:33

We bought her a wigwam for her bedroom. She didn't play with it much for ages - but recently she has learnt all about explorers -on Charlie & Lola at school and the wigwam is coming into its own as she pitches it all over our sitting room the world. The duvet is doing double duty as a boat in the corridor on the Amazon!

hairygodmother · 24/03/2009 13:48

My dd just had her first birthday, gave her one of those pop-up tunnels and a little tent thingy, she absolutely loves it and it isn't too big to have in the sitting room!

alicecrail · 24/03/2009 13:52

Our dd loved her stacking cups and brick trolley (you know the push along things that they walk with) and bath toys

stealthsquiggle · 24/03/2009 13:52

Fisher Price Little People stuff.

Um - what else? I cannot honestly remember what DS got. DD got mostly clothes and books because she inherited too so many toys from DS.

Oh yes - I remember now. A ride-on bee (wheelybug). She still (1.5 years later) loves him lots and so does DS (6!).

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 24/03/2009 13:53

I dd2 that bouncy zebra thing. She adores it. She also loves the Smoby slide I found under the stairs.

stealthsquiggle · 24/03/2009 13:55

these (really cool stacking cups) would be the other 1st birthday present which is still regularly played with.

ohdearwhatamess · 24/03/2009 16:24

stacking cups - ds1 played with those for hours at that age. We've got the M&S ones.

books - Dig, Dig, Digging, Zacahary Quack - Minimonster, Spot books (despite being crap) are very popular with 13mo ds2

cars - they start getting into cars in a big way at that age

bath toys (Thomas one with water wheel is very popular here)

Mine refuse to play with ball pools. That has been my least successful toy purchase.

georgiemum · 24/03/2009 16:25

Something cheap and cheerful and put cash in the bank account. Or get something like premium bonds. Boring I know but at that age...

HolidaysQueen · 24/03/2009 16:31

My DS is 1 next week. We figured a few toys would be good, but that he doesn't need much.
GPs/uncle/aunt/cousins are jointly buying him one of the trikes mentioned by SweetApril. We've got him a Little Tikes rocking horse that can be used inside or out, and are getting him the Ikea train set (like Brio, but tonnes cheaper) - he started showing a bit of interest in a train set last week at some friends, and we figured it's a present that will last him many years.

If your DS doesn't have them, then definitely get him stacking cups. These are by far my DS favourite toy, and have been for months. We have the ELC ones

Baconsarnie · 24/03/2009 16:53

Thanks everyone! I'll definitely get him the stacking cups and I also like the sound of the pop up tunnel or the brick tray. He's got a trike but it's at grandma's house (300 miles away). I should probably get him another one for home, shouldn't I?

Oh yes (light dawns). A brick trolley with alphabet blocks in it - that's what DS got. Very much loved and used for years and years (until it recently wiped out in a high speed crash and DH refused to mend it )

midnightexpress · 24/03/2009 17:21

Don't get a brick trolley unless you have carpets everywhere - they make a right bloody racket on wooden floors - we had to hide DS1's in our old flat and we have to ration use here as it makes such an appalling noise. DS2 has a push along thing that we thought would be better and it's just as bad.

We got ds1 a little wooden trike thing for his 1st b'day and it still gets used (ds2 is 2).

Hulababy · 24/03/2009 17:38

We bought DD a Sony CD player for her bedroom for her frst birthday. She was already getting lots of toys from friends and family. When she was little we would listen to music together at change times, or a little quiet calming music at bedtime if she needed settling. Have only just upgraded it this Christmas (only because she needed an iPod docking station; it still worked fine) so it lasted 6 years with us.

Mummyfor3 · 24/03/2009 17:41

Stacking cups
Wheely bug - phantastic ride-on thingy, still popular with DSs1 and 2 aged 5 and 6
Any shapesorting type thing - great car from Tomy with shape sorter and handle to turn.
