Need to buy wine for DS's christening, is Majestic wine warehouse a good deal - any recommendations of where to buy?

We are getting DS christened next month (better late than never) and need to buy wine for about 20/30 people for the actual christening, the ILs are visiting for several days beforehand and my mother will be there the day before.

So we need quite a lot of wine. I have never bought from Majectic before (its the whole have to buy 12 bottles thing). But this time we need more than twelve bottles - so - are they good value?

Any other suggestions for where we can get good value for buying a fair few bottles at the same time?

Sainsbury's? They usually have offers on some wines, and if you buy six bottles you get 5% off.

Or Laithwaites. They deliver.

I don't know much about wines really [cough]

Annie - me either - Majestic deliver too - and will loan us wine glasses and champagne glasses cheap! - I am just wondering if their wine is better value than the supermarkets (agree Sainsburies sometimes have good offers)

they let you try ime.
are very nice. BE honest , say "I dont know what I want but I want to try it"
they like that

I think Majestic are pretty good, DH buys from there sometimes and his friend who is very wine-y does too. I'd imagine the supermarkets can do it cheaper sometimes, but depends on whether you like specific wines. The glasses deal sounds good, and as BarStool say, if you can try them first - great!

curlywurlycremeegg · 23/03/2009 16:06

I don't find them that cheap, however there is a good selection and you can mix and match the 12 bottles so you don't have to buy all the same wine.

AnguaVonUberwald · 23/03/2009 16:06

OK, thankyou. The thing is its either buy lots of bottles of one red and one white, that happen to be on good offer at the supermarket - or get a selection from Majecstic - so I just wanted to check that they are good value (money being tight these days)

yes I go there and THROW Myself on the mercy of the nice young men (who smell slightly of cardboard).

We bought m&s prosecco for our ds's christening and it went down a treat.
i think its better than cheap champagne and is not bad for £7.19 a bottle. here

AnguaVonUberwald · 23/03/2009 16:13

throwing on mercy sounds good.

Kingprawn, I agree totally, but DH is determined to "do it right" and have some actual champagne! - and since I was the one that wanted the christening in the first place....

Laithwaites is fab !

kingprawnjalfrezi · 23/03/2009 16:37

If you want a nice red Berberana Rioja Reserva Etiquetanegrau is currently half price at £4.99 in Tesco. Its got a decanter silver award and is very drinkable.

dizzymac · 23/03/2009 16:40

You used to be able to loan glasses from Tesco for a returnable deposit.
You had to pay a certain amount for breakages but it was not a lot.

geordieminx · 23/03/2009 16:54

Tesco have £10 off if you spend over £50, free delivery over £100 code is on wine homepage

threetinytots · 23/03/2009 17:11

We got our wine from Laithwaites for DD2's christening. We did the special four seasons case which was 15 bottles for a silly price - £40 I think? You do have to remember to cancel the membership otherwise they will send you a case every month. I think Virgin do the same kind of thing. We had a really good selection - shame nobody drank it!

Champagne and glass hire from Tescos. Glass hire is free, £50 deposit, v low breakages charge.

BarStoolCobra · 24/03/2009 07:43

the delivery is a rip off though imo
