She is a real tomboy, and doesn't like dolls, dressing up, or pink and sparkly things. Very bookish family, so I'm wary of buying books for fear of duplication. Has an older brother so they'll have lots of toys already.

Second NNB's suggestion, this:

www.amazon.co.uk/Scribble-Book-Herv%C3%A9-Tullet/dp/1854377744

plus felt-tips.

DD1 LOVES it.

Playmobil.
Marbles
Bug collecting kit
Grow your own grasshead/hyacinths/egg-plant or anything else.
Paint your own mug/piggy bank etc.

Is it someone in your family or a school friend? What about a book token? I regularly buy book tokens and a bar of Thornton's chocolate for school parties.

Dd1 has just had her 3rd birthday, she is not particularly girly, she had these for her birthday

farm set and animals
pop up tent
jigsaw puzzle
umbrella
trains for her train set
apron with pirate outfit on, and pirate bandana (this is fab!)
new pyjamas

she loved all of them.

Agree craft stuff is pretty safe bet too

lots of brilliant ideas - thank you.

Love the look of the scribble book. Think I'll get one for ds1 too.
