Is it safe to buy an Isofix car seat base second-hand?

I know you're not supposed to use a second-hand car seat in case it's been involved in a crash, but I'm not sure if this applies to the Isofix base as well -- we are thinking of getting one for our Maxi Cosi stage 1 seat. Can anyone advise?
