I have just ordered a Beco soft structured carrier to use with my 8 month old. I currently front carry with other slings and use a regular backpack for my stuff. But I want to start back carrying so need a different bag.

Please point me to come gorgeous (silk would be fab!) smallish messenger style or other style bags!

Best babywearing bag of all time is an onbag
They are quite big, but that link is for the Onbag baby, which is smaller size. they are fab.
If you are any good with a sewing machine you can make one with her instructions as well, I made one in a weekend, it's not perfectly finished but it's pretty damn close!

Oh my god what a fab bag!! How have I never seen it before!

Obviously by not wasting your evenings in a desperate search for the perfect bag

I made a reversable one (camoflauge to flowers) and am making a pink/black one next week.

I can't sew, but my mum can. I may ask her to make me one for my birthday. I will have to go to John Lewis and pick the fabric. I really fancy black velour on the outside and some sort of silk on the inside.

Funny, I have crushed black velvet for the outide of my new one and pink taffeta on the inside.
Get your mum to go with you as some fabrics are better than others strength and thickness wise, plus you need a long length (3m I think) as the strap, side, base and other strap are all one length, so it is really strong.

It was a revelation as it doesn't matter where DD2 is on me, front back, hip, the bag can just be shifted and doesn't dig into her, and it hangs easily off the buggy too.

Sorry, am a bit evangelical aren't I?
