Wii Animal Crossing: Let's Go to the City with Wii Speak

If you have this, is it good? I'm thinking of it for DD, almost 6. Is the Wii Speak good? Is it worth the extra ££? I'm thinking this would be a relly fun way to communicate with cousins in the states.

We have it and we use the game alot but don't use the wii speak very much as we only know my brother who has it.

The game is fab though.

AtheneNoctua · 09/03/2009 13:32

How old is your DC?

OP posts:
CrackerNut · 09/03/2009 13:38

They are 11,9 and 6.

Tbh my 6yr old doesn't really play ti at all but then thats because it's not like Star Wars or similar. My dd's love it though, as do I

AtheneNoctua · 09/03/2009 13:51

Thnks. So, what games does your 6 year old like?

OP posts:
FatFree · 09/03/2009 14:58

I've regretted buying it ever since it arrived cos i've lost my tv forever!

Seriously tho, my kids love it and even my 5yr old son plays and its quite good in helping his reading

My girls use the wii speak with their friends which is all good until you forget that its on and realise that you've been talking about something quite inappropriate and their friends whole family have heard what you said!

Glad we waited till after xmas tho, cos we were gonna buy it for 60 quid, but now its dropped to 40 quid in most places.

AtheneNoctua · 09/03/2009 15:25

Oh, how does it help with reading?

at leaving the wii speak on and forgetting. I could use it to spy on the nanny then. Just kidding. My nanny doesn't need spying on. But I bet it would be fun to listen in on DD and DS. I'm sure DD turns into evil older bossy sister the second she thinks I am gone.

FatFree · 09/03/2009 15:40

Well there's loads of interaction with the characters in the game such as asking him to get a certain item and give it to bunny or whoever

We noticed that he wasnt asking us "whats that word" so much and now he is just sounding out the words and reading outloud to himself.

They have just come home from school so thats me resigned to the kitchen till they go to bed!. Ah well i guess the kitchen does look like we've been burgled so its out with the rubber gloves!

Hulababy · 09/03/2009 15:49

We dont have the speak but, but we do have Wii Animal Crossing (0lus Animal Crossing on the DS) - 6y DD likes both.

There is a lot of reading involved on Animal Crossing.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 09/03/2009 15:50

I just completed a Velociraptor in the museum

AtheneNoctua · 09/03/2009 15:55

"I just completed a Velociraptor in the museum "

Does this mean you are just back from the Natural History Museum? Or is this something one does on Animal Crossing?

OP posts:
PfftTheMagicDragon · 10/03/2009 12:42

Athene, you can dig for fossils around the town and take them to the museum to be identified. You can then either sell them or donate them to the museum. You can also donate bugs and fish.

AtheneNoctua · 10/03/2009 12:46

oh cool. We are getting this game.

LadyMuck · 10/03/2009 12:57

We have the version without Wii speak. It has been a huge hit (used daily since Christmas) but I did invest some time in it early on to help ds2 (5) to get to grips with it (and went round getting money etc).

Agree that it has boosted Ds2's reading (the animals don't really "speak", so it is a lot if reading), and also he is now better at typing letters to his friends. There are a lot of different aspects to it eg Ds1 likes collecting things eg trying to get all the varieties of fish, whilst ds2 likes arranging his house and trying new outfits on.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 10/03/2009 13:13

DS loves making me get on the bus and go into town, then get back on the bus and go back to my village, then get back on the bus and go into town and the get back on....you get the picture. He doesn't, unfortunately.

Hulababy · 11/03/2009 13:54

How do we get an invitation to the shop in the city?

AtheneNoctua · 11/03/2009 15:48

Oh, is there an invitation only shop in the city? I'd like to go there too.

OP posts:
PfftTheMagicDragon · 11/03/2009 20:11

You go and knock on the door, and once you have been turned away, at some point in the next few days one of the animals in your town will bring up the shop to you in conversation. He will send you an invitation through the post and then you can get in. It also costs 3000 bells.

You can get rare furniture and things there but Redd only has 3 items at once. He also sells paintings that you can donate to the museum but sometimes they are fake and you don't find out until you donate them.

ANy more questions?

Hulababy · 11/03/2009 20:13

Ah right - thanks.

Ony done a couple of days of it so far, so limited as to what we have done yet.

How do you help or do jobs for other people?

GreenBib · 11/03/2009 20:14

OH MY GODU UTTERLY LOVE IT

btu have never really got wii spk to work
the game is lovely, have paid off mortgage and caught a tuna

GreenBib · 11/03/2009 20:15

oh another tip , when you log on each day get your spade and go and whack rocks, some yield £££
and to stop the shops not being open before school (!) change the clock.
and the sea fish are worth a lot more £££ than river ones

GreenBib · 11/03/2009 20:19

adn go and listen to kk slider at the coffee shop on a saturday night. think its 8 pm

Hula, tom Knook gives you deliveries to do, also you need to talk to everyone.
dS1 here " when people have an ! on their heads talk to them, rock banging, sell fruit, fish ( have you a rod?) or at this time of year bug catching. Check the lost and found by the town gate, talk to Booker - the one who looks asleep, adn check out the recycling bin in the Town Hall on the right."

thats it so far. Oh he also says do rock banging ONce a day.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 11/03/2009 20:22

Hula, just talk to them. Sometimes there will be an option to suggest that they might need help. There are not as many helping opportunities in this game as there were in the gamecube one.

Rocks yield money, also shaking trees that do not have fruit, but beware the bees! Non native fruit sells at a premium but you have to get it, watch the beach for coconuts!

The way to make the most money is through turnips!

GreenBib · 11/03/2009 20:42

we have no coconuts, or bees. ds1 reckons the turnips are no god - will ask him to check it out.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 11/03/2009 20:46

Turnips are good, but they are a risk. They work best if you have friends you can visit so you have more than one chance a day to sell them.

Bees are in the trees if you shake them, a nest falls out and they chase you!

Eventually, you should find a coconut wash up on your shore. PLant it for more.

AtheneNoctua · 11/03/2009 21:05

OMG, is this game for the kids or the parents? I have ordered it so it's too late to turn back. But it looks like it is going to cut into my MN time!
