Preferably not a Hoover model as this is what we have now, it's 6 months old and had just decided to stop sucking altogether, and DH says it's died.

Need something powerful and reasonably small, and upright if poss.

We got a Dyson DC25 (the one with the ball) about a month ago and are very happy with it so far. Its compact, manouverable and seems to be doing a very good job so far.

Its a replacement for our previous Dyson, which gave up the ghost after about 8 years - that we were also very happy with.

Some people don't seem to like Dysons, but I've never had a problem and none of my friends with Dysons have had a problem.

anyone else? im looking for ideas as well.

miele cat and dog - its fantastic
I hated my dyson, was shite and expensive to repair by the miele was rated highest by WHICH and hasn't let me down yet

Another vote for Miele. Our old Vax lasted a year, then started to smell of burning! The Miele is so powerful, quiet, light and reliable. Worth every penny.

We have a Dyson animal - its 3 years old and we have not had a moments trouble from it. It is just wonderful. We used it the other day at my Mum's house after she had cleaned it with her hoover...and it picked up almost a whole container of dust just in one (large) room. Yuck!
Its easy to use and quite compact compared to some other Dysons as well.

oh, just read you op properly - tha Dyson Animal is not an upright, but there are plenty which are.

oliviasmama · 06/03/2009 03:10

My Dyson Animal is an upright, I'm sure it's the Animal (purple and grey / silver), it's in a cupboard up stairs, everyones asleep so can't check...do they make both versions perhaps. Anyway - I love my Dyson, no probs with it at all, versatile with it's extra bits for the stairs, car etc and a super sucker!
