Has anyone bought they eye glasses on the internet?

I had my eyes tested and need glasses. Saw lovely pair in Boots which would cost me £120 with the lenses.

However, went on-line to show my DH what I might be wearing and they are half the price with lenses!!!!!

So as a first timer what do I need to know? It is as simple as picking a frame in a shop, seeing it on-line and buying it?

Mine seem to be unisex but one site sells them as "gents" and therefore the frame size seems to be bigger than on another site which sells them as unisex. The ones I tried on were definitely unisex

Hi - i need glasses as well and have considered buying from the Internet as they are so much cheaper.

The big drawback is that if you buy online, you will not be able to have the glasses fitted to your face properly. An optician will shape and adjust the bridge/arms to fit you and be comfortable, which is very important if you are going to be wearing them for long periods.

So, I am not sure if the cheaper price is such a bargain, if the glasses don't do the job properly.

I have never worn glasses so didn't know about the frame fitting thing, is this about the arms going over your ears and things?

My Mum wears glasses but it has been a long time since I was with her when she went to the opticians so I cannot remember what she had done.

She is out for the day so I can't ring her either!

Yes, they use a machine to gently heat the arms so they can be moulded.

I need glasses for reading - old age has caught up with me - and I can recommend the cheapo off the shelf in Superdrug or wherever ones. If that's all you need them for, they are between £5 and £20.

My brother in law bought some they were about 35 pounds and he has been very happy with his, he wear contact lenses but wanted back ups.

I wear contact lenses and my last pair of glasses (due to the lenses) cost nearly 450. The time before I decided to get some cheapo ones from specsavers, at the time it was 2 pairs for 70 quid. I did not get them for that price as that is only price for standard and not 'complex' I think is the expression. The quality was dreadful and neither pair lasted more than a few months.

If you wear glasses every day then I think it is money well spent and the price you were quoted for Boots I think is a very good price!!

I've been thinking about buying some specs from the internet too, but the frame-fitting issue has put me off. I wonder if it's possible (for a fee) to take frames into an optician to be adjusted?

Thanks all, I have read up some more and the internet sites say that you can usually get them fitted for free or for a "miniscule" fee in an opticians. I think I might start ringing round.

I have to wear them to read and for using the laptop. Seeing as though I am on MN every day a lot and I read books prolifically too

I sadly can't just get those reading glasses as there is a marked difference between my eyes.

I saw (years ago) a man who was a student with limited means and he needed glasses. He thought that the charges they made for a bit of metal and glass was astronomical and started investigating. He set up his own internet company and did really well from it.

I know you are saying that the boots price is decent but I am a sahm and in these credit crunch times I need to save money where I can. Plus I would then need to have them coated which is another £15. That's almost 2 weeks worth of food shopping
