Car seat advice needed for a VERY big baby!

My Ds2 is nearly 5 months old but is a whopping 22lb, his head reaches the top of his Maxi-Cosi rear facing car seat, he is very squashed width wise too!

He weighs enough to go in to the next stage car seat, but obviously because he is still so young, he doesn't have the neck strength needed to be facing forward if we have to break suddenly etc, and they don't seem to lay back far enough.

I know you can get the seats that rear face and then turn to be forward facing, but even they say that once baby is 10kilos they need to be front facing, well he is 9.93kilos now!

What do we do??

Anyone else have a big baby and what car seat do you have?

Any help gratefully received!!!

It's fine for the top of his head to reach the top of the car seat. He only needs to be moved when the middle of his ears comes up to the top.

So, he'll be fine in that seat for a while longer

Doesn't the Maxi Cosi go up to 13kg? If not the Britax rear facers do.

Have a look at www.rearfacing.co.uk/. There are a number of car seats that are rearfacing till 4 now.

You might also want to talk to the Essex County Council In-Car Road Safety Team. They are extremely good, have lots of practical experience on what seats actually fit in what cars and will let you try before the seats out and have a look. You may not even need to go to Essex: They get hired out to do car-restraint safety checks around the country (often at firestations) - I rang a few days before they were coming near me and so they brought 3 seats along with them to try in our car.

I'd definitely recommend seeing the seats before you buy - 2 of the 3 they brought fitted in our car, but just didn't look right or comfortable.

Fingers crossed you can find a solution

i have a large ds and he went into a britax two way elite from the in car safety centre. they have offices in belfast and milton keynes if that helps you at all? they were really helpful. or cathy or vicky at the in car safety centre in essex were really helpful too!

DS was about 20lbs at that age. We stuck with the maxi cosi. As someone else said they are fine until over half their heads are sticking over the top of the car seat. I think he went into the maxi cosi priori xp at around 9-10 months
