we really need to upgrade our lovely volvo v40 (i'm really keen on volvos....they feel so safe) so that we can fit three car seats properly across the back seat and have decent boot space.

dh and i have been drooling over the xc90 and arfe about 80% sure....they just seem a bit ....big!

we do lots of driving to scotland and france and we need to haved lots of space for kids (4yr ols 1yrols and baby) would also like a decent car that lasts

would like to hear pos. and neg. opinions please

tia

We don't have one - have the XC70 which we are happy with.

I do know lots of people who do have the XC90 and are happy with it. Have some friends who are on their second and have no plans to change - in the 20-odd years we have known them they have changed car a lot but are planning on sticking with the XC90.

verygreenlawn · 09/02/2009 11:45

Does it definitely fit 3 across the back? I'd be interested to know.

wideratthehips · 09/02/2009 12:36

it has three specific seats across the middle and two further in the back, but these are suitable for children really....poss. to do with leg room. when the seats in the back are down there is a huge boot

I've got the latest What Car and it gets a very good write up, only downside is expense to run but you would expect that for a car that size.

My fave website at the moment is Honest John - go to car reviews. It's been spot on for several of the cars we've owned.

frazzledoldbag · 09/02/2009 13:02

I know quite a few people that have one and all recommend it. Also it has a built in booster seat (from about 3yrs upward) in the middle seat in the second row.
(and incidentally the XC90 is top of my list for my new car when I change mine next year).
I think they're fab (and I happen to know they have REALLY dropped value recently so there are real bargains to be had out there, even on brand new). Haggle, haggle and haggle some more.

(oh and Jeremy Clarksons wife has one. Which surprised me).

silverfrog · 09/02/2009 13:05

I used to have one, and loved it. Would have another like a shot.

Good space in rear seats (i only had one dd at the tiem, so don't know about multiple car seat spacing). has a built in booster in the middle seat.

the rear two seats are fine for adults, as long as not overly huge (I fitted fine, and I'm 5'7")

huge boot with rear seats down, bearable with the seats up.

wideratthehips · 09/02/2009 13:48

thanks everyone.....we are going to try to get.........hmmm i think its called a geartronic....the fuel consumption is not so bad and the road tax bracket is not so crippling.

dh refuses to buy a brand new one because of depreciaton but i think....if its going to last 10+ years why not and we would look after it properly

silverfrog.what happened to your old one?

we are hoping to get a decent trade in for our v40 which is prefect but has 110K on it but has never let us down

OP posts:
silverfrog · 09/02/2009 13:50

very long story involvong dh's ex demanding money she was strictly not entitled to, and we had to sell the car to realsie soem cash.

very sad all round, but hey ho life goes on.

wish i'd still had it this past couple of weeks, though

wideratthehips · 09/02/2009 14:01

ooops sorry....was wondering if it was knackered and how old it was/mileage etc.....i forgot that real life can intervene at times...sorry

OP posts:
silverfrog · 09/02/2009 14:04

no worries

can't help you out on how long one would last etc, mine was exactly one year old when we sold it [sob]. mpg not brilliant (averaged about 30 mpg, so on a par with people carriers of the time - this was 4 years ago)

frazzledoldbag · 09/02/2009 17:10

wider we were recently offered a MASSIVE discount off a brand new one (and by massive I mean almost 10K) by a volvo dealer. Think they are having trouble shifting them! We didn't get it but that was more due to our current circs with our current car deal being difficult to get out of - if we could have swung it, it would have been a great deal.
If you're looking for a good quality used have you seen autoquake? They sell ex-fleet cars (and usually at a good discount). New stock arrives daily too I believe. Haven't bought from them, but them appear to have good feedback if you search. Good luck with the purchase. Am v. jealous (have to wait another year for mine, boo)

wideratthehips · 09/02/2009 17:16

frazzledoldbag

my dh is always checking out autoquake!!

we are getting a home improvement loan (ahem) from our mortgage company....its being added on to our mortgage (we have been with the same company for 10yrs have 200K equity and the interest rate is at 4.5%)

we are getting 18k loan (we haven't finalised yet paper work is still to come from underwriter) but i would be very intersted in a new one with nearly 10k off!!!! where was this?

EldonAve · 09/02/2009 17:18

adding myself to the thread as we are considering getting one

frazzledoldbag · 09/02/2009 20:38

The new one was in Perth Volvo (Stratstone) but it was a high spec one which should have been around £44k and they were offering £9,900 off . It was what they call 'disadvantaged' - something to do with emissions I think. Give them a call, not sure if they still have it. It was silver with black leather. Luvvverly.

charlieandlola · 09/02/2009 20:51

the 2007 and 2008 models are in the highest tax bracket for c02 emissions.
the new 2009 model is under 225g.
We are waiting until 2009 models are ex demo or 12 months old and then getting our next xc90.
It has been a godsend recently ( live down narrow lane) and it feel soooo safe.
It is like driving a small country though.
and I can only park it front ways in, and have to take up 2 spaces otherwise I would never get it out. Oh, and I don't take it into multi story car parks.
Apart from that, perfect! ( unlike my parking)

cluelessnchaos · 09/02/2009 21:03

I have a 2008 model and love it, definately can get three kids in the back, boot seats are easy to put up and down, huge boot space. Really heavy on the diesel, geartronic is fantastic, but I always just use it in automatic.

wideratthehips · 10/02/2009 10:02

eeeeeeeeeeerk at 44k for a car,

dh has a really well paid job but it would feel crazy to spend that much money on a car (my prudent scots background)

hmmm there seems to be so many variations to take into consideration

OP posts:
frazzledoldbag · 10/02/2009 10:16

I know, 44k is A LOT. But getting it for 34K was tempting. (it was s-line finish with all the extras - sat nav etc). The scariest thing of all was that when we looked into financing it in detail and got a quote for the PCP thing where you have a balloon payment at the end, it's guaranteed value at the end of 3 yrs was only about 10K! . Hmmmm. I know that it's just a 'guaranteed' value to safe guard them at it would prob be worth a bit more in reality but you can't really tell and 10K residual on a 44K car is pretty gutting I reckon. Still, if you're planning on keeping it for 10yrs or so, none of that really matters does it?
I reckon Autoquake is a pretty good bet though for a good used one. Or in fact big cars like the XC90 seem to have dropped in value hugely of late so wherever you go you'll get a bargain I'm sure. Good luck searching.

frazzledoldbag · 10/02/2009 10:17

sorry, wrote that in a hurry. Apologies for the appalling punctuation and grammar

Cammelia · 10/02/2009 10:20

If you've got a V40 at the moment have you thought of a V70?

I have one and love it

wideratthehips · 10/02/2009 13:28

we thought of the xc90 because of the extra seats and more boots space...imagining in a few years time loads of kids and their friends being ferried around.

when we go away at the moment, having a travel cot/p&t/clothes for four and some toys is a tight squeeze

OP posts:
stardazzle · 10/02/2009 13:36

we hired an xc90 to go away with friends and if i was in the market of a new big car then that would be top of my list! We got luggage for 4 adults and 3 children in the boot with the back to seats up inc a pushchair. My friend and i travelled the whole way to disney land paris from sheffield sat in the very back 2 seats, We had three car sears across the middle, the only slight pain was having to remove a booster sea to get out of the back. Fab car!

frazzledoldbag · 10/02/2009 19:19

Oh I want mine now, don't want to wait another year. Boo hoo.
