Ds turns 4 next month and a few people have been asking what to buy him. I am looking for ideas ... probably up to about £30. Anyone's ds mad about their christmas present .. and want to share?

Lego, lego and more lego. This is what he plays with all the time.

Also does enjoy his playmobil knights.

bodiddly · 29/01/2009 13:57

Ds had a lego starter kit for christmas from my mum ... and the fire station from us. I was wondering about adding to it as he does love it ... does yours have kits or general bricks etc? A lot of the kits seem a bit old for him.

Yes, playmobil is great. My DS loves his playmobil knights and dinasours!

basementbear · 29/01/2009 13:59

Lego still a bit tricky for a just-turned 4-year old IMO, unless you are very willing to do most of it!! my DS's both loved (and still do) Playmobil - but watch out for the teeny tiny bits if you have younger children!

AttillaTheHan · 29/01/2009 14:01

Another vote for playmobil here.

Also ds loves Knex, he has a monster set which he has played with a lot. My mum bought him a marble madness set from elc at christmas, he needs a bit of help with it but it keeps him entertained for hours.

bodiddly · 29/01/2009 14:02

playmobil isn't cheap though is it ... I heart the new Egyptian collection, but that would be more about me playing than him! There is a great looking cowboys and indians set reduced to half price online but he doesn't know what cowboys and indians are yet!

We got a massive playmobil castle in TKmaxx for £19 last year. Its always worth a look there imo.

bodiddly · 29/01/2009 14:09

TK maxx is a good idea .. though it is tricky as its not going to be from us. We are only giving him little things this year. I hadn't considered Knex .. that may be a possibility as he loves building things. He spends hours with his old duplo (the smaller stuff) or his Christmas lego.

DS1 has got the lego bricks, roof tiles, wheels and the creator set.

He spends hours building things but has always loved stuff like that.

bodiddly · 29/01/2009 15:00

Ds loves the wheels etc .... maybe I will look at some of the creator stuff.

his own wee cd player and a selection of cds.

purplejeans · 29/01/2009 18:52

Anything to do with Pirates. But he also likes dressing up..has about a thousand dressing up costumes which he plays with all the time.

Spoo · 29/01/2009 18:53

My DS loves PLanet Protectors. He also likes his microlite scooter and his spiderman dressing up costumes.

dottoressa · 29/01/2009 18:54

DS is now six, but loved his big Megablocks when he was four (and still plays with them now!!)

He also liked his construction toy (a German wooden one by Heros), and had a huge K'nex phase when he was five (the one with all the tiny bits, not the stuff specifically for younger children).

He's always been mad about construction. He's never liked Playmobil, though (too many people and not enough focus on building for his liking!)

lucykate · 29/01/2009 18:56

the playmobil cars and lorries, also loves the lego fire station which he got for christmas, it's a bit old for him (he couldn't build it by himself) but loves playing with it as it also came with some fire cars/engines.

SoMuchToBits · 29/01/2009 18:56

Another vote for Playmobil here!(Although anyone who knows me knows I'm Playmobil-mad ). It's not cheap, but will last for ages, and you can keep adding to it.

Also ds liked K'nex, Brio Builder System etc at that age.

idobelieveinfairies · 29/01/2009 18:57

My DS loves woody and buzz....and all the other toys in the house.. horses, money box pig etc have been turned into bullseye, ham etc...imagination...all sorts of scenarios going on here.

He also loves his wonderpets flyboat..he saves many many animals each day.

Lizzylou · 29/01/2009 19:01

General lego brick box
Playmobil Pirate ship/Pirates
Playmobil Take along castle (from Tesco, cheapest we found) with extra Knights you can pick up from Ebay
Playmobil Dinosaurs mixed in with ELC Dinosaurs(the Triceratops ones has a col volcano)

bodiddly · 29/01/2009 19:06

lego, playmobil and knex seem to figure in most posts then! He has a playmobil pirate ship which he likes. He is not massively into cars so was wondering what other playmobil sets are worth considering. He likes dinosaurs but has some elc plastic ones so not sure that is worth it. I know he would love the zoo but that is waaaaay too much money!

It is the age old problem of having a birthday so close to Christmas - we tend to try and get things that are age appropriate-ish but that will last him for a long time. Hence I try and avoid his latest fad character toys like scooby doo or diego/ben 10 etc. Playmobil and lego are good .... will definitely take a look in more detail

Lizzylou · 29/01/2009 19:12

There's a Playmobil Pirate Treasure chest, which is good
We had loads of ELC Dinosaurs and the PLaymobil ones have really added to them.

Both my DS's birthdays are in March (they will be 5 and 3) so I am just adding to their existing sets (Lego Fire station stuff is on our list!). We have so much stuff already, and we cull things (have a young nephew and the PIL's have some of our old stuff for the boys to play with when they are there) but it is neverending!

One thing that I got for DS2 this Christmas (for £15 in the sale at Woolworths, not sure where else you could get it, Argos, Toys R Us?) was a Roary the Racing car basic scalextric set, which they both love.

Lizzylou · 29/01/2009 19:13

OOh, and go on the Lego website (sorry if you already have) the stuff there is loads cheaper than the sets on Ebay

Shelly75 · 29/01/2009 19:13

My DS is just 4 and he adores his playmobile rescue helicopter -£20. Never been one for playing on his own, but this has gone down a storm.

Othersideofthechannel · 29/01/2009 19:13

DS's favourite toy when he was 4 was his train set
