DS is 4 - he loves playing with dolls houses at other people's houses/nursery and I wanted to find him one that wasn't too girly. Anyone seen one that isn't just all pink pink pink?

I have seen some lovely wooden ones. There is a little shop near me that makes them.

norksinmywaistband · 14/01/2009 22:29

playmobil?

smellyeli · 14/01/2009 22:32

Ooo yes - nice - will look at playmobil too, as may be a bit more indestructible

My ds2 had a wooden one from ELC, a few years back, don't know what theirs is like now. It's currently being used to house Playmobil Roman soldiers!! I wouldn't go for a Playmobil house with a 4 year old ds as I think there are too many fiddly bits but I like the Playmobil one you can carry around

DebInAustria · 14/01/2009 22:37

Just looked t elc - why have they changed it to a pink house????

tortoiseshellWasMusicaYearsAgo · 14/01/2009 22:39

This is nice

Tommy · 14/01/2009 22:39

we bought DS2 a wooden one from ToysRus - a few years ago now. It wasn't too expensive and we got other people to buy all the furniture.

It was very popular although has now been demoted to the loft as the Wii has taken over...

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 14/01/2009 22:40

We have this one: chalet house - it looks expensive but it is such a beautiful well made house. I bought the plan toys furniture too and it's really robust - bought extra furniture at toys r us and it is crap and has already broken. Plan toys are the kind of quality you'd find in schools and nurserys.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 14/01/2009 22:44

this is also pretty cool.

smellyeli · 14/01/2009 22:51

I know, Debs - all pink! I know I shouldn't mind, but I would prefer a neutral one.....

Hangingbelly - thanks! That plan one is gorgeous. There are some nice ones out there - I've been looking at Playmobil ones on ebay, too - they seem to be the Volkswagens of dolls houses (sturdy, reliable. hold their value) but am not bidding as have had wine.(DH's rules)

my DS loves his playmobil camper van - a bit like a dolls house (he can put the children in bed, set the table for dinner etc etc) but he also likes to drive it about. Might be a bit more fun than just a dolls house?

Danae · 14/01/2009 22:56

smellyeli · 14/01/2009 22:59

Yes, camper van - great idea - could also participate in RoadRug activities (basically a big rug with a picture of roads printed on it, but a whole day's activity - don't you just love 4 year old boys?)

I just love MN - only my second post. DH is amazed at speed of responses, and asks - are you all sat next to your DP's on the sofa drinking wine and not talking??

DebInAustria · 14/01/2009 23:00

Danae - I want one - it's gorgeous

smellyeli · 14/01/2009 23:02

Wow danae - they look like something out of Lord of the Rings - I'm not sure I'd be able to let him play with it.....

DebInAustria · 14/01/2009 23:02

your dh has a lot to learn!!

smellyeli · 14/01/2009 23:03

I know - he has yet to realise the true power of MN

The Playmobil 'modern house' is very gender-neutral, IMHO. DS doesn't have it (only because he has so much other Playmobil) but would like it - and I will probably get it for DD at some stage as I am no keener on her having pink plastic than I was/am on DS having camoflage weaponry.

smellyeli · 14/01/2009 23:06

Stealth - I think I am tending towards the modern house - ithas the benefit of having lots of accessories available on ebay, thereby providing endless present opportunities. DS is not allowed weaponry, but constructs it from Lego. Ho hum.

Haven't had a chance to look at the other replies, but the Marlborough Pintoy wooden doll's house is very neutral and beautifully made.

We've had it for a couple of years, DD and DS both play with it. The furniture isn't too girly either

smellyeli · 14/01/2009 23:11

Very classy amazon - I have just got a new job (NHS, but promotion - quite lucky in current climate)so maybe DH would sanction the ££...... It's what one would call an investment piece, I think.

I think that just about sums us up !!

stealthsquiggle · 14/01/2009 23:12

Eli - We bought DD this and DS plays with it at least as much as she does - by the same token they currently have matching bruises on their cheeks from a sword fight (bruises are from the edges of shields ) so I think there is a balance there to be acheived
