kiddy guards are great because you furl them in at night so not always on show.

Had mine years, they are expensive but I love mine

Thanks very much for your reply RRunner. Have looked them up on Amazon and they have had these comments: "When you retract the gate it makes a very loud clicking noise unless you hold the button down with your other hand. Sometimes it does not roll up properly and you have to pull it out and do it all over again. The fabric is starting to fray at the top." The roller sticks out a fair bit from the wall
-The blind part hangs rather saggy after a while
-One handed operation is very difficult! I usually had to knock the bottom part with my foot to unhook it if i was holding my child and was trying to do it one handed
-Sometimes doesnt retract properly. You end up opening and shutting it a few times to correct.

Do any of these ring bells with you? I'm hoping not as they sound exactly what we need.
