I'm after a rag type doll for DD aged 5...lilydoll, groovy girl?????

Please help, DD loves her baby dolls (Annabel etc) but I wanted to get her something different for Xmas this year.

I've looked through previous MN posts re dolls and concluded that the lilydoll was the one to get. However, these dolls have been discontinued and although I can get hold of one, I'm assuming we won't be able to get any outfits at a later date (not really sure how important this is anyway).

What are groovy girls like in comparison? Can anyone recommend any alternatives? Does your DD have a lilydoll and are they worth the money (around £30)?

Thanks

My DD has eight! They've been very successful with her over the years and I'm amazed they're being discontinued.

I think they were worth the money. They have nice, friendly faces, are cuddly and have gorgeous clothes.

We chose them over the Groovy Girls because the Lilydolls' shoes come off, and the Groovy Girls' shoes don't - how can you take a doll to bed if she's still in her shoes, and the fabric hair looked tougher than the wool on the Groovy Girls.

She got the first one on her third birthday and that one still looks as good as the later ones, despite having been machine-washed (in a pillow case) a couple of times.

We got ours from Urchin, the mail order toy company, and a shop in Sennen Cove, Cornwall - I can't think of the name for the moment but they were the licensed suppliers for the UK.

We also bought Madeline rag dolls, based on the characters in the Ludwig Bemelmans books, and they were a great success too. But hard to find in the UK. Ours were bought from the US and the range has been very reduced.

dd had a lilydoll that I thought was lovely but she never really played with it. They had them recently in our TK Maxx, so might be worth a look there?

Thanks very much mm & ll. I've ordered a new lillydoll from ebay which cost £22 delivered. I will be off to TK Maxx at the weekend though so will have a look to see if they've got any.

I hope it's a success. Just thought, I don't know if they still do it but M&S used to stock an own brand rag doll and outfits for it. All the outfits fitted the Lilydolls and were considerably cheaper than the real ones.

I never find anything worthwhile in TK Maxx. I think they spot me coming.
