A wind up radio shouldn't need batteries right?

Bought one from Tesco last night as have always wanted one and it was only £8. It requires 2 AA batteries. I thought the whole point of a wind up radio was that it doesn't need batteries. Am I wrong?

you don't need batteries for it but winding it 100 times gives about 10 minutes of listening time.

putting batteries in it saves winding it every few minutes.

Hmmm, that sounds dubious to me. Our wind up radio doesn't take normal batteries (it does have a charger though so you can recharge it without arm power if it's really flat).

Don't see the point of having to have AA batteries - seems to defeat the object when they need some non-chemical way of storing kinetic energy in a rechargeable battery inside of it anyway!

We have this one - Freeplay Ranger. Recharges via solar, winding or charger. 100 times/10 minutes sounds a vast underestimate (unless it's a DAB radio?) - the Ranger is about 1 hr per 1 minute winding.

We have a Freeplay torch too for camping which is excellent.

Mine used to go for about an hour and a half between winding.

Until it got watered in the garden....

Unfortunately I can't afford a more expensive one. Can't really justfiy this one except I've always wanted one and it was so cheap. I might take it back as having batteries in it defeats the whole object.

Found this

It says that you can choose whether or not to have the batteries in!

thank you! Must remember to read the instructions next time! I just didn't want to open the box if I wasn't going to keep it.
