Nintendo DS online dangers?

Anyone know about Nintendo DS - can they go on-line with the standard consoles? Do we need to set up parental controls on this?

The way they come as standard they don't go online, so you won't need ot do anything.

tissy · 12/12/2008 21:27

I didn't know that you could go online with them

AFAIK, you play a game on them, and if set up correctly, two DSs can talk to each other......

(you can tell it's my dd who has one, not me !)

OK, and what about the LAN - where they can chat to people 100 m away - does that pick up random people, or can they only link with someone they know? Don't want to have to police hidden dangers, so thanks for any info.

Hathor, how many DSs do you think there will be within 100m of where your child is? Both DSs have to be communicating in order to connect so there isn't much chance of inappropriate stuff or accidental encounters.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 12/12/2008 21:41

I think the only online thing is to play games via WiFi over long distances.

Hathor · 12/12/2008 21:46

OK thanks. I will stop worrying.
Though I imagine there could be 100s of dodgy Mario characters nearby

They can go on line through wifi. My DD talks to her friend on animal crossing, but they need friend codes to communicate.
Pixochat can only be done within about 100m

christywhisty · 12/12/2008 22:10

If you want to use the wi fi connection and your wifi is secure, you need to know the security code to access the wifi, so a child is unlikely to be able to access it very easily.
