Stairgate or alternative for awkward stairs

At the bottom of my stairs on one side there is no wall for the last 4 stairs and no bannister. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can make it safe for DD 15 months bearing in mind there is literally nothing to fix anything onto on one side. Thanks

teach her how to crawl backwards down the stairs.
tbh, by this age, i was removing stairgates. not putting them up.

You could maybe put a stairgate somewhere else to keep her away from the bottom of the stairs - we put two across doorways rather than one at the foot of the stair for similar reasons.

But I agree with stitch - at 15 months she can learn how to go up and down stairs safely, can't she?

Thanks for replies. Didn't even think about teaching her how to get up and down safely herself although she has only been crawling for just over a month so not sure if her crawling skills are up to it yet!

Me too. Teach her how to do stairs. We have about 7 differing flights in our house (maisonette with stairs to garden) and I never did the stair gate thing because it would have been impossible (and dog would always have been on wrong side of gate...)

When they started to crawl or shuffle bum(about 8-9 months), I showed them how to come down the stairs on their bottoms holding onto the bannisters. It took them 2 days to master going down, even quicker to get going up (on all fours). Neither ever had an accident and IMO they were much safer than other 'gated' children, esp when going to places where there were stairs.
